finally, if your alone, arrange a pick up at the airport. the taxi mafia is in force at pulkovo. there is a taxi stand in the airport where you can book a taxi at a better price, but it's still a lot more expensive than what you could arrange if you can call a normal taxi and have it pick you up (rough cost for a normal taxi is 700 rubles, more or less; taxi mafia will shake you down for 3000 rubles). there are also regular buses and small vans that go back and forth from pulkovo to different metro stops (#13 or any bus or fan with 13 in it goes to pulkovo 2). the bus costs about 35 rubles. small van is 50 or such.

Phones. You can buy a SIM card in StPb and use it for your mongering. They are inexpensive. I use Megafon, but I don't recommend it. Friends use MTS and there are a few others as well. I believe you can even pick them up at the airport. If your waiting around for a ride or such look for kiosks. You can put money on it at machines located practically every few feet on the major streets, but I don't recommend this either (some of those machines are real rip offs and charge sometimes 50% surcharges). If you find an actual Megafon or MTS, etc, shop, the machine in it will not have a surcharge. As you can see, one of my major concerns is money. So I always try and find the best priced options in all areas when I travel to stpb.

And money. Make sure your cash is free of writing and isn't too old. Russian banks and exchanges will not take "damaged" money and if you meet a girl and she is "experienced" she will not take it either, because she knows she can't exchange it. The last time I was in Piter a girl I know there begged me to give her rubles for $400 an American guy gave her in Moscow, because she couldn't exchange it anywhere. When I saw the money, it looked okay to me, just a little wrinkled and worn, and I had no trouble depositing it in my bank when I got home. This is with American dollars. Not sure if the same issue exists with Euros.

The taxi situation very much depends on your Russian and money. If you can speak a little Russian you have a lot of options. You can flag down an opportunistic Russian and negotiate a price (what most Russians in Piter do, but they usually do it in groups of 2 or more) , call a taxi service and arrange for a taxi (best option for commercial taxis) and flag down a taxi on the street (most expensive. European priced). I think you are also ahead of the game if you speak a little Russian and want to use the salons or websites. There are a lot of websites in Russian and they cater to Russians and have Russian prices. Also, many of the posters here have noted that you can have problems if you find a salon but don't speak any Russian.

I'm aware of the stereotype that taxi drivers are sources of info on girls / salons, but I've never asked a taxi driver for this help when I've been in StPb.
