Tax on remittances from the USA
A buddy just sent this to me. If you're an American retiree living overseas and relying on non-bank remittance companies like WU, Remitly, Wise, Grit, and Zoom, be aware there's a provision in the Trump administration's "Big Beautiful Bill" act that will levy an estimated 3. 5% surcharge (tax) on transfers out of the USA.
As proposed, this doesn't affect me at all. But I'm guessing this might have a sizable impact on non-wealthy Americans staying here on tourist visas that don't have access to alternate methods. If someone transfers $20,000 per year for living expenses, the surcharge is $700. That equals 500 San Miguel Lights in AC's Perimeter Road bars. Ouch.
Note: I did not post this to instigate political arguments. But it's potentially a big deal for some of our less well-heeled ISG expat comrades everywhere.

The rush, the gush, then the blush
Most strip clubs and some videoke bars in northeastern Mindanao (Cities of Davao, Tagum, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, San Francisco, and Surigao) have airconditioned VIP rooms that give you the chance to spend a couple of hours of quiet time with a dancer / singer. Amenities vary greatly between clubs. Some rooms have cushy couches and annoying videoke machines. Others have hard benches or plastic chairs and no entertainment systems. For between P2,000 and P2,600, depending on the club, 2-3 LD's (lady's drinks, normally SM Pilsen) and 3-4 customer beers are brought in. If you entertain more than one gal, be prepared to buy more inflated-priced drinks to satisfy the group.
As for "extras", it depends. Prostitution is illegal in the Philippines, so the club operators cannot sanction overt activities. But they turn blind eyes at whatever two consenting adults do behind their closed doors.
Some gals are comfortable only engaging in conversation and hand-holding. Others are up for kissing and petting. And there are times the girl will take the initiative and go farther. Entertainers who go to the VIP room do receive extra compensation from the bar. Depending on the level of lustful activities, the dancer may expect a tip. If so, I normally give either P500 or P1000 and have never received a complaint for not giving enough.
Recently I visited a club and was asked if I would sit with a new girl who had just started working there. Ordered a beer for me and a LD for her as we watched the show.
