In my opinion nowadays no hotel, as far as I know will ask you for your marriage certificate if you are a couple, just your ID card will suffice.
But if he takes that option, he has to ensure that the lady has to behave like his wife and not like a WG. Her dressing, way of talking and body language will reveal to the hotel staff whether she is a a wife or a WG. And mind you hotel staff nowadays are trained in that way to identify whether she is a WG or not.
