I just wanted to come straight and tell you all a story that happened to me. A few months back I went to shanghai on a business trip, being there I decided I wanted to go see some tourists attractions so I ended up walking around nanjing road around 6 PM. After looking around I was easily spotted by this friendly girl, a young Chinese girl who speak some english, enough to communicate between us. She was really friendly and I said, wow, this must be a SW but I'll play along. She kept talking and eventually invited me to got get a cup of coffee. Hey, nothing wrong with that I thought so I went to this place called Zen Run Bar which is on a 3dr or 4th floor of a building right there on nanjing road. She pulls me to a private room, the waiter comes in (she was really hot) and I ask her if credit cards are OK, she says yes so I think, well, I don't mind paying $100 on a bar tap so I ordered a tea and this girl some drink. Everything was going fine and she was getting more friendly, then her friend comes in, she asks me if she can order a drink and I didn't mind so she did. Along with her drink came fruits and more drinks for the friendly girl I met before. After a few minutes this friend flees and leave us two alone in the room, the friendly girl now was throwing herself at me trying to kiss me and rubbing herself against me. Is not that I didn't liked it so I continued playing along. Ok so, at a point in time she asks me to go with her to the bathroom, so I did. We left the room and went over to a separate place where the bathroom was. A few minutes later we come back and I notice a whole bunch of drinks now served on the table. What is this? I didn't ordered this I said and it wasnt long before I just finished saying this when the hot waiter comes in with another round of drinks. I told her, No, take that away, no more, and proceed to ask for the check. She left the drinks and went to get the check. A few minutes later the check comes in and SURPRISE! 17. 000 RMB. This is too much I said to her and all of the sudden a second girl comes in, the bar manager I guess and tries to intimidate me telling me that I had to pay and that I had to hand her over my credit card. I immediately knew this was a scam and all 3 of them where in this together and everyone will get their cut. OK, no problem, I handed over my plastic, signed the receipt and left. When I get to my hotel I think to myself, time for the scamee to become the scammer, so I call in and report the credit card stolen. Days later on my monthly statement I report the outrageous amount charged as unrecognized so they reverted the charge and I didn't had to pay a single dime. Man I wish I could see their faces now. I mean if it would have been $100-$150 I would have payed but they went too far. Later I found out on the internet this is a very common scam in China, also known as the tea ceremony scam and I completely fell for it, and actually some people have been taken in by the authorities because of this. Maybe I will go back there someday and I will go up to this bar and say, Hey, remember me? Did you get your money? And laugh at their faces. I'm sure the friendly girl got her commission and my understanding is that on these cases the credit card company does not pay up them because of the fraudulent charge. So, they tried to f*uck me up and ended up been f*cked over.
There you have it my friends, now you know it, if you ever go to this bar, go check the hot waiter out and tell her to go screw herself.

I think it is something asians are not keen to have.

But they might be around at any time, also when you eventually go and laugh at their faces.

the same happend to me some years ago - but fortunately i stopped with the first plate of fruits coming not ordered by me...but still they wanted 1300 rmb for 2 drinks...i got very angry and then got threatened by some sumo ringers behind me. i chose a similar way out like you: i signed with something but not my signature and later made a police note back in germany saying that i had handed over the card first, but then did not use it...the result was the same..got money back etc.
me, too, dreamed of going there one day (i now live in shanghai) and smile for them...but it was probably very smart that i could resist...
anyhow i am not sure if the credit card company really gets the money back from the bar.
so be happy about your luck and forget them.

And generally in Shanghai. If anyone goes with a tout they have not RTFF, short for read the fucking forum. While I have a little sympathy for laowei's being taken advantage of, what it shows is that you have not done your homework. NEVER, NEVER, Never follow a tout, male or female anyplace in Shanghai. Single females, females in pairs, threesomes, 2 females, 1 male or two males and one female. I've never been approached by 4. But it's possible. Just don't do it. End of rant. Damn.

some guy i know has been victim of a similar scam in shangai.
went back to the hotel, arranged for police to know.
the police raided the place and closed it.
the day after police receives a "nice" video of the guy together with a girl, handing a condom full of just delivered "proteins".
his consulate told him to get out of the country immediately and never come back to china.
so sometime revenge is a dish not to be eaten even when cold....
Staying op topic of the nanjing road scams, I've noticed they have become more frequent recently with the touts being slightly more aggressive than usual. Remember never follow a tout, even if its a good looking girl.
In the past when walking from the Bund to Peoples Square (I. E Nanjing road) I've been approached maybe once or twice by fairly average looking girls offering either 100rmb massage / practice their English / sell an art painting / practice university entrance interview / learn about foreign culture / etc etc but ultimately it is the same scam of taking you to some tea house and giving you a huge bill. Recently however I have been approached up to 5-10 different times by very good looking women aged from about 18-25 who are quite aggressive in trying to coax you to follow them. I'm guessing its due to the run up to Chinese new year and they want to get some more cash before going to their hometowns. If you want freelancers better to just go to the sports bars or the newly opened Manhattans, don't pick them up from nanjing xi lu.

Went to a new place in Jin Qiao that advertises itself as a men's spa and sauna. Stopped in for a look around and it looks a lot like Sacrosa or the old World Plaza B2 but nicer than B2. That though is where the similarity ends. Ultimately it is just and expensive HJ place with a nice sauna and nice massage rooms.

Based on this report, went originally to check out Amor massage across from Eton Hotel. However, had a yearning for a normal night with no rub and tug, so went to the Athen's Basilica Star Bathhouse directly in front of it.
