Most tourist needing a car get off the plane and jump in the first Rent-A-Car line that looks familiar. Dominican view these tourists as fish on a hook. They plan on getting you before you leave or when you come back. They attempted to charge me for a lump on the tire.

Much respect to you for leaving and not going back. They normally wait the gringos out because they know we have more money than patients during a vacation.

By the same token if you go somewhere off airport those smaller mom and pop places think they have you by the balls so will jack up the price because there is no competition around. I had to have one of those companies take me right back to the airport after trying to rip me off. You never know what you are going to get down in that country.

As I said before I lived and worked in Thailand for years. I grew tired of the corruption, two tier pricing, general incompetence and all of the hoops you have to live through to live there. A GF in Thailand in my opinion is a near necessity. She can get things done you need done because she is Thai. You would have a much more difficult time doing things on your own. In addition the salary I was making, which was good by Thai standards, just couldn't compare to what I could make in the States. And when I thought about my 401 k, retirement etc I decided not to stay there any longer.

I didn't hate it. But my feeling on it was neutral. I have not been back since.

Fire your time machine and go back 10 years or so and you will find all the 1000 DOP you want. If you plan to come to the Dominican Republic and you find 1000 pussy please post about it here.
