Yes, and in AC they usually post the rates in the window. In AC I've found rates get better the farther away from Fields you walk, but they are all pretty competitive. Sometimes I'll go to Norma's just because they historically had the best rates. Bless Norma's heart.
Rates tend to be better in Manila, if you know where to go. But rates can vary widely in Manila. Several years ago I had a place try to rip me off. Actually pulling bills out as they handed it to me. It was in Ermita and I posted a picture of the place right here at ISG.
There is a place just off Pedro Gil (in Malate) that always gives me a good rate. I guess I've become a regular. One day I walked in and the guy says, "Sorry, your X-money doesn't have a good rate today. ".
In Ayala mall (Cebu) you can get a better rate on the 3rd floor than you can get on the first floor. Best rates are had at the little hole in the wall place on Fuente Osmena Circle next to Mercury Drugs.
When I went to Ormoc Leyte money was a never ending problem. There are not many money changers and many shops struggle to give change for 500 pesos, never mind 1 k. Even the friggin hotel gave me a bag of coins for change. The maid got a good tip that time.

But evidently this bar is owned by a Korean so I guess it's par for the course.

Wake up around 9 and I am smiling. Content. Happy. It's been a great trip so far. I was surprised with how many men were here in a group (2-4). I was under the impression that AC was full of loner wolves out hunting. If a guy was in a group, he looked happier than the single guys walking. Especially on Walking Street, guys in groups just seemed to be laughing and having a really good time together. You can have a lot of fun here flying solo but I think you can have a lot more fun with a wing man. Or two.
AC is a fun place to be. And it's easy to figure out and navigate. I found it safer than I had imagined but at the same time, I was also very cautious. Apart from the crocodile customs officer, I think I did OK.
It's hot but it's manageable. Everything really is within walking distance but you may find a trike to be helpful. And, if you get tired or are too hot, just stop in one of the many bars and have a beer to refresh and then continue walking.
For first timers, you don't need to RTFF. It will help and if you do decide to RTFF, you can't just read 4-5 pages; you have to go back a long way because this forum has so many reports on it on so many topics. You will get better at navigating as you read more. If you decide not to RTFF, I think you will be okay as it's a pretty easy place to figure out. And you will learn as the days go on.
Don't worry about trying to find the best bar with the prettiest girl or the best value for money. I found most of the bars were perfect for what I wanted to get out of this trip.

I know a couple of long-standing residents in AC who both have them and they were issued "legally" but everybody knows these guys too and they look like senior citizens.
I was offered the opportunity to get one by a barangay councillor (a kagawad) in another place (not AC) , who happens to be my father-in-law. He said I am eligible for one because I have lived here for 18 years and he will sign my recommendation. I haven't bothered yet because it is such a pain in the neck to use with all the paperwork required.
The bill has to be computed separately and if there are 2 or more people it takes forever for the server to sort it out, and then you have to sign this and that. Last time I had dinner with a guy who wanted to pay for me but he was also trying to use his Senior Citizens I. D for his share and I ended up just paying the total bill because the hassle threatened to take up 15 minutes.
If you have received one Pirate then I assume you were given it through the right channels which means nobody will challenge you on it, especially if you really are over 62 years old and if you look like a senior citizen. If it is a fake and you are using it for penny-pinching to save a few pesos here and there then taking such a risk is silly. In the unlikely event that you get "sprung", the consequences are probably going to be unpleasant.

My knowledge of the law is that it is purely for citizens born in the Philippines. Correct me if I am wrong about that.
Last month I was in a restaurant and a group of 5 Asians speaking Korean or Chinese whipped out their SC discount cards. They didn't appear to be Philippine senior citizens to me nor even close to 62 yo. The owner was not too happy but didn't challenge it.
I left before I blew a fuse.
I am not concerned about a restaurant tab really, but I made a purchase at SR the other day and the bill was $220.00. Net savings had I used the card would have been $63.80. These are the type of purchases that I am interested in. (it always amazes me the moral indignation of a foreigner who has come to the Philippines to have sex with the poor of this country who have to fuck for food.
