Well simply put, I don't go anywhere without a phone and the iphone is what I have for a phone, I actually have 2, one I use for taking discrete video such as I took in Atunes which I'll post later, and one I use for phone calls,
As to the chain, I'm a little superstitious and I never take that chain and crucifix off.

I read your report with much sympathy, but, with all the friendship I feel for you even if I never met you, let me say that if one goes to SantaFe with iphone, gold chain, clearly "gringo" looking, no matter how big he is, then he is going to experience *AT LEAST* what happened to you. It could have been worse. Never forget that a "gringo", or any healthy tourist, is looked like an easy ATM walking machine by all the poor souls that hang around in places like that.
They are poor, they are *hungry*, they are wild, used to live in a hard environment. 2k COP may be enough for them, to eat, even to buy some glue or coke (1g is sold for 3k there). Imagine if they see 100kCOP walking nearby in the pocket of a tourist. BINGO!
I am not surprised that they did not consider your 120kg before jumping on you. When I went to SF at night, I dressed dark, no jacket even if it was cold (my jacket looks too expensive), I put my watch in the pocket, possibly no wallet but just 50k, my ID but no passport, etc. (ah, if it rains, do not take an umbrella LOL, even if somebody, who clearly does not go there at night, tells you that it's OK: you'll never see the average guy strolling in SF at night with an umbrella, even if it rains heavy). The strategy is to *blend*, be as less evident as possible, to not attract attention. You clearly did the opposite.
As a side note, I felt less safe the night I ventured in East St. Louis, MO, USA! I am white, no hope to blend. I was in car and I would have never parked and go around on foot. Santa Fe is much better (ah, also much more interesting for us <grin ). The only time somebody tried to rob me was when I lowered guards, feeling safe (error. ! ). See my past report.
Bp with all due respect, I think many are getting hung up on details I gave. An iphone no one sees. Its in my inside jacket pocket which I'm now sure they mistook for a wallet as the size and feel is the same, my jacket being not a suit jacket but a work jacket much like you see carpenters wearing. The chain is a crucifix, frankly you will find even the poorest catholics wearing something similiar, my wife having given it to me as she is portuguese catholic. The net outcome is it wasnt the iphone that was hidden or the chain under the tshirt, it was the fact that I'm black and far too dark to pass for native. As my client told me after my salesguy told them what happened. Anyone whether sante fe or anyplace else in BOG will recognize me as one of 2 things. A dominican tourist, or a black american. Simply put I'm too dark. If anything thats my underestimation because most times in south america I pass until they hear my speak. Either way I've definitely enjoyed your very informative posts and look forward to reading more of the same.

You should see some of my video from montreal. An iphone sitting in a briefcase pocket looks pretty innocuous thus its great for hidden vid as escorts in montreal don't think twice of it sitting in a outter briefcase pocket.

I'm almost as big as that and the kids who came at me didn't care either. I seriously wonder wtf they were on, normally obvious muggers leave me seriously alone.
I don't buy the bit about them being HUNGRY either, they are just punk kids looking for extra money. Most of them are under 18 and live at home in some barrio or other with mommy cooking and cleaning for them. I have no sympathy for human trash like that.
Sorry to hear about your experience Doc Simp.
The thing about Sante Fe is that you have to assume that EVERYONE is checking you out and judging you as a potential target.
When going there, you have to assume 50/50 chance you're gonna get robbed or at least approached. Like the others have explained, it's quite a dog-eat-dog environment, these folks from the south of Bogota are no joke. I think it's the altitude that makes them so treacherous.
They probably marked you in the club when you whipped out the iPhone to film the chicas. Even if you think you were concealing it, trust me, someone noticed.
Actually, in my trip to Bog, I lost a cell phone too although it was not as expensive as your iPhone. It was an $80 Motorola. Which was enough of an ouch. Not even sure how I lost it. Might have slipped out in a taxi or at Salto del Angel (nice popular club in the Parque 93 area) as I had stupidly put it in the outer pocket.
I would recommend going out at night with a cheaper cell phone. I now bring 2 cheap cell phones with me for use when traveling; no fancy smartphones, just stuff I don't mind losing.
Same goes for laptops; just bring a used older model instead of the latest greatest Dell or ThinkPad. That's sufficient for pics, email, Skype, and some web browsing.
For those who have second thoughts about Santa Fe, you can try "La 49" on calle 49 and septima in the Chapinero area which can still be dangerous by the way but usually not as bad as Santa Fe.
Whiskeria 49 is much more expensive compared to Santa Fe area but for me, I can manage these prices a few times when on vacation. The staff there will look after you although they can be a bit annoying in terms of trying to sell you stuff, I gave one guy there by the name of Wilson a 10 or 20K COP tip for smoothing things out for me and answering all my annoying questions, plus 5K for the guy who unlocked a nearby ATM for me. Yes, I took out hooker money from an ATM at 3 AM accompanied by 2 colombian guys I had just met in Chapinero and nothing bad happened!

Ran out of my favorite lubricant and condoms. Someone reported on an adult toy store here in Bogota. A while ago.
Would someone please give me the name and address.
Thanks
Mel
Phun,
Good advice on the cheap phones. Good info too, Im back in the world now but hopefully someone else reads it and it saves them some grief on alternate locales, as well as other info.
coke (1g is sold for 3k there)
I imagine that's basuco rather than coke. Its addictive properties make coke look like kid's candy. Frightening stuff. As are the people who use it.

Don't fool yourself, there are just as many robberies and muggings in Chapinero as there are in Santa Fe. I prefer Chapinero just because it's easier to get to.
I was trying to think of how much time i spent in the sack with whom I couldnt do it in my head so i resorted to this list ( this is the summary).
Here is the 5 day tally
Number of chicas 8
Number of tln 2
Number of sessions 16 (I counted the bi sexual as 1)
Number of hours of sex 45 out of a total of 115 hours--not bad-however not a record
I am now at my novias and she is suspicious as we have not been having all night sex as we normally do.
However I have a week with her to make up some more leche.
I imagine that's basuco rather than coke. Its addictive properties make coke look like kid's candy. Frightening stuff. As are the people who use it.
Why? cocaine is really cheap there (unfortunately!).
I dont use it, so I cannot guarantee about the price I mentioned (1g for 3USD). I just asked a couple of girls (who use that and perico) in Bogota and Cartagena.
PS: sorry. I wrote 3k COP. I meant 3$.
