Well, suggesting someone at his first visit from USA to take a bus and arrive there at midnight, with luggage and all, maybe why not a cell phone to explore the map to find the hotel, is insane.

Enternational and Black Page clearly know the score on this one. Fully agree with their experiences. As with many late night areas the sensible thing is get to know it really well by day first. Then you know the walks, the body language, the trash, the girls hangouts, the directions to move swiftly to if you suddenly decide to. If you are arriving late at night with luggage, the Nutibara is maybe a slight exception as it is adjacent to where the bus stops (though I can't remember what time it runs till, but well after dark). It stops at the back of the Nutibara, which is an average-disgusting street, poorly lit, but if you can hightail swiftly / nonchalantly round the corner it seems ok. You wouldn't stand there at 1 am wondering if someone is going to politely offer to help you carry it. When you check in at the Nutibara, remember to ask politely, "and is it ok if I bring a companion back?" The English-speaking receptionist may avert her eyes and nod emphatically. It's a strange area. You can sit in the outside bar in perfect hygiene overlooking the great unwashed looking past (rather like the nice barista cafe outside the museum during the daytime). But once you go for a walkabout just remember you are pretty well much in no-mans-land and act accordingly.

I too have walked alone in and around Plaza Botero late at night and can pass for a Colombian, however I'm still nervous late at night. All of the friends who I have been with and stayed in El Centro with who cannot pass appearance wise as a Colombian have been either followed and / or pick pocketed during their time there. Some other guys that I have met who stay in El Centro are afraid to go out at night unless their in a group. Sounds a little weird but some guys stay in El Centro, primarily hit the Casa's during the day and then stay in their rooms at night.

I second the endorsement of Hotel / Motel Ibiza! Great place. Very discreet. Great price. Clean. Updated. Great Jacuzzi and shower. Only problem is that you might run into a problem in prime time (e. G. , Friday and Saturday night). I took a chica there last Friday night and got to the front gate only to be stuck beyond three other taxis and to be told by the guy at the gate that it would be a 50 minute wait.

My taxi driver actually took us to one or two more decent places with the same issue. We finally ended up in some lower quality place in Estrella (Motel Estrella, I think). Clean, cheap and safe enough, but no amenities. Just a place to fuck.

I do speak Spanish, but it's obvious to anyone who speaks to me that it's not my native language. Of course I dress appropriately and don't flash money or jewelry.

That said, I have prowled El Centro a bit. In the daytime I feel completely safe. At night I am cautious as I get away from the major commercial spots. I am looking to be on a street with multiple people, checking (and comforted by) a police presence (there's quite a bit of it) and definetly avoiding dark alleys and corners. So far so good. I diod live in NYC for seven years so I understand walking with confidence and projecting a "fuck you" attitude. But as I said, the minute I open my mouth, any pretense of passing for a local is gone.

I lived in NYC for seven years, so I think I can handle MDE. I guess it depends on your risk tolerance but I think the attitude you display is everything. Some would say why bother? And you're probably right, stay at Del Rey and you will not face these risks. But on the rare occassion that prowling El entro rewards you, it will be a far greater reward than anything you will ever find at Del Rey.

Please Help any info is welcomed. My guys and I (3-4) want to try Colombia for the first time. We are veterans of Sosua DR but want to try a different country. I'm the one pushing for this so I want to make sure we don't waist this trip. I have a few questions but again all info is welcomed. I have done some research.

1. Medellin (city) or Cartagena (beach) for late night action? All in all which is better? We like the daytime action at Sosua Beach but I hear Cartagena isn't that nice.

2. Is Oct a good time to go?

3. Best area to stay? My research said Poblado.

4. I guess we are looking for the Colombian version of Sosua DR. Is that unrealistic?

5. We are use to taking chicks with us out the club. Is that safe? Do they do that?

6. Prices we should expect for an 8, 9, 10.

Don't go to Hawaii looking for it to be like Miami just because they both have sand. Each place is different and has its own draw. Enjoy each for what they are in and of their own merits. Sometimes I feel like Thailand and other times I feel like Philippines. I would never go to one on the hopes that it would be like the other.

Small town with everything in walking distance, nice beach, lots of available chicas. Nothing like that I know of in Colombia.

The two don't compare and are both very unique. Cartagena is also extremely hot and you might find yourself sleeping in the day and going out at night. Sosua is far far easier to get action day or night. Cartagena is difficult to land girls at the beach and you really have to meet them, get their phone and set a time and place. Sosua is also much cheaper.

Take a look at Santa Marta but you will have the same day issues as Cartagena and the city past Santa Marta can be more dangerous.
