I realized he was on some bullshit, so I gave him 2000 pesos and he fucked off. Sure, I could stand on principle and maybe saved 2000 pesos, but if he was committed to the fuckery, how much more hassle does this add to my life?

I come from a country where corrupt cops are the norm. There's zero fucking upside to having any kind of interaction with them. You never know how an interaction will go, because no two cops are the same. And it's not my job to teach any of them a lesson.

I have been stopped by cops literally about 30 times in DR. (The rental car companies used to have a sticker on the back window so they see that and pull you over.) The only time I have given them money, I was actually in the wrong. They had a radar gun and I was superspeeding on the highway. There were 2 cops and I gave them 200 pesos (100 each). They dapped me up and told me to be careful. Why do you guys give them so much if anything at all?

Many times I have gotten stopped, I have written a report about it here. One time they falsely accused me of blowing a red light. I told them I was on the way to meet a friend and they gave me a police escort while holding on to my license. When we got to where I was going they asked for some money. I told them I did not have any money and they gave my license back and left. I guess I just don't scare as easily as most folks.
