Everything has been said already there. RTFF (sorry, but that's our motto). There is even a map with casas (totally unavailable when I visited the place for the first time 8 years ago).
I never go to casas, except a semi-clandestine one after BazurtoA which I know since 6 years ago (the lady was used to bring me naif new girls from barrios, but last times she disappointed me).
And don't expect reports from me in CTG about dark alleys. In CTG I go upscale. The variety of girls is wide and they dress up to flash our attention. I go little to LDV, more around Plaza del Reloj (some jewels there come and go sometimes), more in Opera and Espace (the clubs open starting at 3 am, which replaced our mithical Elektra. RIP!)

Many people, both locals and tourists, have told me the area around the Prado metro station is not safe. I have walked around the Parque Berrio and San Antonio stations during the daytime without any problem. There are many casas within walking distance of the Parque Berrio station.

I'm trying to get the low down of the best options / advice for a group of Non-Spanish speaking travelers to Medellin. We'll be staying about 1 mile from Parque Llera.
We are about 10 British guys, looking to party for a weekend. Given limited Spanish abilities, and warnings about just trying to mingle like we would in streets of England. What is your advice? All of us are single and are headed to Colombia for pretty much nothing but a fuckfest to unwind from the rainy weather out here.
Should we hire a local guide? Any recommendations?
Can we bring women back to our place for overnights / sex parties?
Or better to go to local parlors like San Diego or Fase II?
Appreciate the advice.

Just a hunch, but this sounds like an inside job to me. I have read about taxis working with banditos in neighboring Ecuador a lot, and the way this went down sounds a lot like it. The taxi driver signals when he has a big fish, in this case a guy flashing jewelry, and his motorcycle buddies pull up and rob the target.
On a side note, I was in that area around midnight last night and didn't notice anything in particular, so they must have cleaned up the scene quickly.
This is just a block away from the Mansion hotel. Sad and scary.

Everyone knows the tourists are comfortable hanging around Poblado, so they are there ready to rip you off. Nobody is trying to rip you off in Centro because it is not known for many foreigners. And when they do see one they figure if you are there you are more streetwise than the average gringo. Just because you "feel" safe does not mean that you really are. Likewise, in a place that you do not think is safe more than likely nothing will happen to you. Ex Santa Fe in Bogota and Vila Mimosa in Rio.
Keep your wits about you at all times and be aware of your surroundings. Both people and places. If something seems out of place be careful. Out of place means someone approaching you at an unusual angle or people staring. Be safe my friends.

I have said several times that Colombia is inordinately dangerous in many regards. I have been to 49 countries now and Colombia is the only one where:
1) I was robbed multiple times (I. E. , twice in the same trip).
2) I was robbed in broad daylight with cops looking on, and indeed involved.
3) I was physically assaulted while being robbed of a very small amount.
4) I got thrown in jail for the weekend for resisting a robbery.
5) I received counterfeit bills from a taxista and then he called the cops.
6) The doormen in my building increased the danger rather than reducing it.
Out of all these 49 countries I have visited, Colombia is the ONLY one that I tell most people not to go to.
Take that for what it is worth. I still would go back there under the right set of circumstances, meaning a great exchange rate, the right wing men, the perfect time of year, and so forth, be.
Ut I don't like:
1) Fake tits.
2) Fake asses.
3) Guns.
4) Shitty food.
Out of 49 countries, I would rate the food in Colombia somewhere around #43 or so. I have spent a total of about four months in the country and I had two memorable meals.
It is an open secret that a majority of police officers are on the gangs' payrolls (100-200 k pesos per week). They receive the payments to facilitate the gangs' business, IE. Robberies, extortion. City administrators and district judges are similar.

Interestingly enough, the guy was a Chicago cop!
I think we can be lulled into complacency in Poblado because it's a nice, relatively wealthy area.
In response to Dickhead's post --- Do you really think Colombia is any more dangerous than Brasil or the DR? I've spent considerably time in all three, and to me they all can be quite dangerous in their own peculiar ways.
