VT... you point out something that is very important in Ukrainian and Russian apartments. In warmer months, the hot water is typically shut off for weeks at a time and the cold water can be very sporatic with low pressure or being shut off for hours at a time. As we all know nothing kills the moment like no shower being available either before or after!

When you book any apartment in the FSU it is a very good idea to confirm exactly how that apartment service will handle that situation which is sure to occur in the warmer months.

For instance, when we build/remodel an apartment in Odessa, we put in a back up water tank with a pump AND a separate boiler in each apartment to control the hot water. This gives you full control so you are not dependent on the city services for anything... water, water pressure, hot water or heat. Of course the larger the back-up tank the better, but 250 liters should get a 1-BR apartment through a couple of showers. At our new place in Odessa we have installed a total of 6,000 liters of back up water so this should more that handle our group of apartments there!

Although I've never heard of an apartment service restricting how long you can stay... I have run into problems in Kiev for stay of less than four nights and they wouldn't book them until the last minute for fear of losing a longer term booking. In Odessa there is no length of stay problems that I am aware of.

It was suggested to me on the Odessa thread that I might find more info about reputable travel agencies on the Kiev thread. I've searched here, but didn't turn-up any leads.

Following on CA Traveler's suggestion below.

Does anyone have experience with reputable travel agencies in Kiev? Ones that can be entrusted with making arrangements/purchases of tickets for local flights, particularly to Odessa?

Likewise, for providers of local English- or French-speaking guides for day excursions / translation (for a newbie to Ukraine, with no Russian/Ukrainian language skills like me)?

I travelled many times between Kiev and other cities in the Ukraine (but mainly to Odessa). At the begining I purchased my tickets from the airlines offices (the are all downtown around the independent square), but for the last couple of years I have just randomly used travelagencies which I saw in the streets and never had a problem - you pay, get your IATA ticket in your hand, and walk out.

Dear BBBJ,

GIA is of course not an aptartment renting company, but they have quite good ones and they are very central located, specially those on Lesi Ukrainki and on Khreshchatyk. Walking distance from every think, ad some metro stops to River Palace.

Sometime, in very high season (July – August) they even rent out apartments they do not have on the site. It happened to me some years ago, I found a really good courtyard apartment, just a block away form the Khreshchatyk.

In my opinion their service is good and reliable. Only one thing. Always confirm by phone (real voice I mean) the day before of arrival… sometimes they tend to be a little overstressed with work and they miss some reservations! It happened to me but they fixed it in a couple of hours.

By the way that time in a new VW Passat, I had the driver, the interpreter and a nice slim blondinka teen (a special offer not on the internet catalogue, looking even younger than she was, sold out as “virgin type”!). Bagira locaed 10 minutes from the center (5-6 USD taxi one way).
Rakuena located in very center. If you stay near center, you can even walk there. But you should call for booking before you visit. They have only three rooms including waiting room (if two rooms are busy, they also use this room).
