Location:
Solo, Java Island. Short walk from city center, near the train and bus terminals. The backstreets among the many hotels that fill the area. Other things to do:
Solo is quite a relaxed and historical city. Wide streets with relatively little traffic. You will enjoy it after Yogya. Many historical landmarks to visit. Also, many interesting mountain peaks nearby. Keeps you entertained for a week.
Safety:
Because so few westerners take the trouble to visit, you might be stared at often and shouted (in a friendly way) " Hey Mister!" "Hello Mister!" but it's harmless. The traffic is very mild and the air is clean. The huge number of "Crazy Screamers" , amplified 1000 times and waking everybody up at 4am at night may bother some light sleepers. But it's everywhere in this country. you will get used to it.

sure, there will be, but generally - those two are not good monger destinations, Bez. Both cities are quite remote and getting out there will take some time.. to Manado from jkt it took 11 hours (for me) hotel to hotel. Ok, the hotel appeared at the other end of town and there were no taxi's at the airport on arrival, adding at least 2hours to the travel time, but still, things can be pretty primitive out there. Great destinations for ecotourism and diving, bunaken/ some beautiful nature reserve close by, but business entertainment - stick to the 4 largest cities.
Also -sure don't want to offend anyone by saying this- but girls in Manado are (only generally speaking) less looking than their Javanese counter parts.. Not so for Ambon, but Ambon continuously struggles with religious turmoil. cheers.
