Took a while to parse through that article as it seems that when it comes to subjects of economics, the experts in that field always seem to be creating some abstract variable or new index to evaluate difficult to quantify metrics like "quality of life" and "economic freedom."
Hopefully I'm reading it right but it does seem that looking at what PEW determines as disposable income, that the USA is doing quite well. When I speak about incomes with Europeans, it does seem that their standard of a high income is much lower that what typical Americans consider high.
But are these metrics accurate when considering out of pocket costs to live the standard in America? Does disposable income factor the lack of safety net in the US? I'm not so sure Europeans have to save as much for retirement in private 401K type funds in order to ensure you can fund the golden years. Tertiary education is another major life expense that Americans have to account for. Obviously healthcare is another huge out of pocket cost. Then there are all of what the article cites as "punitive" costs and fees. It seems like American institutions nickle and dime you for every little transaction and administrative fee, adding on Sales tax at the point of sale, paying a company's salary with the tipping culture, etc, etc, etc. Ever compare speeding tickets in the US compared to average European ones? It's highway robbery here!
It makes me wonder how much validity there is to this claim that we over here enjoy a higher standard of living. I do agree with the economic freedom assertion. Less taxes means more cash in the pockets. I remember when I made the decision to not carry health insurance at one point to save money, I had that option. Don't want to go to college? Cool no cost there. It seems that perhaps we benefit from an a la carte system while in Europe they have an all inclusive price tag where if you don't use it, you lose it.

Although around an American holiday weekend at Sharks, it might seem that way. But even then, American mongers would be less than 10 percent. Their average daily spend is without a doubt higher. There are many Americans that have the financial means to fly to Europe, but that does not mean they actually do it. Most mongers prefer to monger locally, regardless of income. But if we compare the average American against the average German, I think the wage gap shrinks considerably when we look beyond just the numbers:

Ah. Definitions, "tax", "excise" etc. Let's see. Well, property tax in the USA (should be called reproductive lifestyle / education tax) is pretty steep, for me $6 k. Then I pay for water, about $2 k, trash $0. 5 k, health care (including all the little tacked on bit, deductibles and BS, $4. 5 k), car insurance perversely does NOT immediate, no-fault out of pocket medical costs, and so is worthless without another policy to sue the other insurer to pay up, $1. 2 k, so $USD14.2 out the gate.
Add to that State sales tax / GST / VAT and state income tax. And student loans (shark lending).
Happily, capital gains tax is optional, it is only wage earners on W2 who get clobbered and do understand other people no tax whatsoever, totally legally, provided it is not "income". If you pay income tax, then add $3 k for every person in the country military tax, money to social security ponzi schemes. The bipartisan "raise taxes" is the greatest con going, because both never, ever, dare to mention that real estates, share trades, banks and tech don't really have to much or at all. Medical costs, including dental and even veterinarian bills, can be so large that many feel the need to save, save, save in case something disastrous happens. And I think the low interest rates are actually going to make that worse since so many risk-averse folks will feel they need millions and millions to retire. Of course, the ultimate risk (death) eventually occurs, and most people right before death wish they had actually spent more during life. Europe likely gets it more correct on health care than the USA Does, but I don't think they get it right on employment opportunities. I wonder if one of the reasons that so many seemingly older ISG members get really angry about a price increase from 50 euros to 100 euros is the fact that there are relatively fewer part-time jobs in Germany and surrounding countries for the semi-retired?
