In the fall last year I learned that one of my regulars from the closed Siag Pyramids Hotel health center in Maryutia had relocated to another hotel gym in the Giza Pyramids area, so I paid it a visit and made a few return trips toward the end of last year. With all the chaos in the Haram area and the drop in tourism I wondered if the place would survive, but I made it there last week and can confirm it is open.
It's a 'health club' style MP at the Pyramids View hotel; the name is kind of misleading. The view of the pyramids is minimal, as I noted when out of curiosity I checked out some reviews of the hotel on TripAdvisor. In fact, I didn't see many positive reviews about the hotel, but of course hotel quality was not why I visited. The thing that most regular tourists complained about was that the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. You can tell that in the past the remoteness was probably nice, in the midst of fields and canals, but the area is now being developed. It's still far out; you can see the place from the ring road. I usually approach it from Pyramids Road, and where that street becomes one way before the pyramids and requires you to turn right you continue down about two kilometers, past the end of Faisal Street, past an amusement park, and past a mosque, all on your right. The hotel is on the other side of a canal on the left. Most Giza taxi drivers know it, and when they did not I would hand them the phone to speak with the madam Hind for directions. The model is similar to that of the old Siag MP: what were formerly poolside hotel rooms are now used for 'massages. ' The difference is that there is no actual gym here, unlike Siag, and so the pretense is rather transparent, despite the sign for a 'Health Clup. ' On a couple of visits there were parties around the pool, including a group from a local university, and I understand that wedding parties are held there. I imagine that the sight of men entering hotel rooms with unveiled Egyptian girls wearing tight clothing raised some suspicions, which would explain the plywood barrier set up a couple of months ago to hide the room entrances from the pool area. And I can't believe the foreign tourists never noticed (at least they did not mention it on TripAdvisor!). Inside there's not much to see; there are massage tables and each room has a bathroom with a hot water shower (ilhumdullilah) , but the rooms are kind of worn and cleanliness is so-so – bring your own Kleenex for when they run out.
More important, the girls are nice, though the quality of their appearance has varied somewhat from visit to visit; the latest group look good.
