As I sit here waxing poetic about Filipinas-Opinions and Advice, after some boring research I have come to an epiphany about the small, elusive mammal known as "pinay". The first is the frustration that many westerners feel when they are answered yes to a question posed about anything. To westerners this might be seen as little white lies, in the discourse to avoid any unpleasantness caused during the interpersonal relationship. It seems yes can mean anything from a Filipino. Yes can mean: I’m not sure, maybe, or I don’t think I can do that but I don’t want to say no to you. The Filipino anticipates and gives an expected answer in order to avoid a negative reply. This is what I assume means when you ask a bar girl a ‘how much’ for services rendered and you get the answer "it’s up to you". It is all about personal relationships and saving face. Other ways of saying no without saying it could be: if you say so, we’ll see, I don’t know, I will make an effort, or the obvious lifting eyebrows without comment.
This concept ties in with the importance of family and kinship. As most BG’s come from the province, or are at least tied to family in the province, they still feel some form of obligation to the family or family name. I think in the barrios, family honor means everything, and most BG’s are still cognizant of that fact. The Philippines is mostly a country made up of island communities, with each island having it own identity and series of values, as evident by the strong Muslim beliefs in the Sulu Archipelago to the mountains of Luzon. I think this is why the idea of central government is not taking hold; vastly different cultures without a unifying belief.
The idea of family commitment is why politics in the PI is also strange to a westerner. Filipinos respond to family ties, and politics have nothing to do with capabilities. If someone knows or is distantly related to a candidate, then they will vote for that candidate no matter what. There is also the repayment of debt, or "I owe you one". My guess is politics in the PI is all about doing favors and receiving repayment.
Kinship does not apply to outsiders. Tourists are fair game when it comes to pricing, however, should that same person be applied to a family (this is my friend/brother/whatever) then kinship should apply and they should get a fair price.
Westerners can avoid some hassles by using the go between. In order to avoid conflict, the outsider should employ a go between or "fixer". It has been stated on the board before how some guys got extended visas in 30 minutes and others it took 4 hours. Filipinos sitting at desks in government offices are less likely to deal with hassles or bureaucracy or having to say no to someone and thus seeming incompetent. Instead, they can have a go between and not lose face, and still complete the task. I imagine this is how business is done in the PI. Would be nice if Mamasan was on our side ALL the time, but many times not. Unless you know her and have a good relationship with her. A good go between in BG’s is often the friend/cousin/sister. How many times have you guys heard, "My friend likes you to bar fine her"?

Having spent a good amount of time in the PI, and being married to a pinay, I can say you are spot on. I'd like to comment on this sentence: "the strong Muslim beliefs in the Sulu Archipelago to the mountains of Luzon"...you are talking about a small majority of filipinos here, and you may know this. The country, as most of us know, is 90+% Catholic, with the majority of Muslims being in the southern area of Mindanau. Youre pretty hard pressed to find a Muslim in Luzon.
But everything else you said is spot on. The idea of saving face and "I owe you one" in regards to family and friends is the driving force behind these girls. Everything they do is for their family. If you spend time in a place like Burgos or AC and ask 10 girls why they are working in a bar, I would bet at least 7/10 will say for their family. We take it for granted they say this, but under the exteriror *most* of these girls are still provincial girls with a deep, deep loyalty to their family. I WILL say this is a generality, but generalities are generally true :).

Chief: If your goal of the trip is to monger I would suggest heading straight to AC. There are a couple busses that run from Ermita to AC daily. Theres really only 4 things to do in AC: drink, eat, sleep, and monger. Thats about it. There are hundreds of girls. Whatever your fetish or taste, you will find it in AC all within a few blocks.
If you want to see some sights, Manila is OK, but you might want to look at Subic also. It really is a beautiful place with lots to do. And P4P is really growing there. One bar owner from AC sold his joint there (Kokomos) and opened a new place in Subic for this reason. I dont want to violate linking rules but if you Google Kokomos Subic you will find the info you need. Check it out.

My next door neighbor in my moderate subdivision was a Muslim. I remember walking out my crib and seeing his wife paying with their child with the scarf over her head. After being in and out of Afghanistan I was taken back by this. (After working in Afghanistan for the last four years let’s just say I don’t hold Muslims in a high light). I didn’t want to stay there anymore but came to my senses. That’s the same way some assholes behave when they see blacks have moved in next door. The guy recently sold the place to a young Pinoy and his family...Turns out the guy was self employed and his business was deteriorating. Tough economic times eh?

ChiefThinker, my advice is to stick with Bangkok, unless you're searching for more GFE sex with girls who speak some English. Aside from Greenbelt and a few other areas of Makati, Manila is a polluted shit hole of a city that hold nothing of interest for those who have traveled extensively.

There's a Tagalog phrase that explains a lot about how filipinos and filipinas feel about their families: utang na loob. Strictly speaking, there isn't a straight translation to English as the meaning is embedded in their culture, but it has to do with the sense of obligation that they feel toward their families and other superior figures in their society. If you google it, you'll get better explanations than I could give.
