Nelson seemed alright to me
My friends & I met Nelson through another agency called CALIVIP in December. He was pretty cool and spoke English pretty well. Drove us whereever and never overcharged or begged for anything. He in fact drove us up to the statue known as Christo Rey which took a while to get up to and down from(if anyone gets a chance check out- awesome view). He never had the meter running, we offered to buy him lunch at a nice little stop off and he declined. When he dropped us off he didn't ask for anything. We gave him about 50,000 pesos between the three of us for about 4 hours of his time. All in all, seemed like a nice guy. We even offered to buy him some girls in the houses that night if he drove us around but said he had to go home to his mother so we figured him to be a mama's boy. Maybe that's his cover though.
Anyway, this is my first post on this site which I found a few weeks ago. Very informitive. I will be going back to Cali next tuesday for a week and it will be my 6th trip in the last 16 months(cant get enough). I will be staying in the south(Jardin to be exact). Anybody know if this bombing occured near this area? Just curious. Keep your fingers crossed for me non the less. Also. anyone know any good houses to go to in the south. All the good ones seem to be in the north. And any good houses to go to during the day. Is Dr Amor in the north? I think i've been there a few times but I'm always too buzzed when i get there or too tired when I'm leaving to remember the address. Any recommendations or suggestions for my trip next week would be appreciated from anyone who's been there in the last few weeks. I'll be sure to post my experiences when I get back in late April and hopefully some nice pics.
If this is the same Nelson, and I believe it is, he works out of an agency, Colombian Women . com or something like that.
Someone recommended Nelson to put an ad in a newspaper and interviewed the girls that showed up. His wife answered the ad calls and scheduled the girls for their interviews on a Saturday from 9 to 5. Cost was $500. I paid him up front, as he was recommended by a friend who had been satisfied.
He had a conceited girl with big fake knockers ride with him to meet me at the airport. Suggested I take the girl and forget about the interviews the next day.
The next day he showed me a camera that my buddy supposedly bought him as a gift. Suggested I show my appreciation too and buy him a gift.
Several of the girls were regulars from a Cali agency, or average looking friends of his wife. Only a couple were hotties and they were not too motivated... had kids, good job in Cali, etc. He made an effort to get the phone numbers of the hotties for himself, though he promised me he was faithful to his wife?
Completed the interviews but did not find any non-pros worth investing my time or money beyond the $500. BTW $500 is alot of money in Colombia, the average Colombian earns $200 a month, more or less.
Maybe some of you other gentlemen have had the same experience with Nelson?
ok I have finally gotten to the bottom of the matter
and winner, it turns out we were both correct, but you were more correct, because of the manner you initially used the phrase.
it turns out we have two seperate, loosely tied in, but in fact different expressions.
no joda - is an expression of asombro, which means fright, amazement, astonishment. Toss out fright, because of all the circumstances I have heard it used in, it is obviously an expression of amazement, astonishment
and it can range from "you don´t say" to "you have got to be (fucking) kidding me".
It is a COLLOQUIALexpression, that is why you will not find it in any book, and this is also why no one´s gf will be able to explain to you where it comes from, gramatically (though note it stays true to grammatical form)
it is most commonly used in coastal Colombia (and Venezuela which shares much slang with coastal Colombia). The reason I whiffed on this while in CCS is because I would always hear it when groups of Venezuelans would come into the Internet cafe to play Counterstrike, which was an online virtual counterterrorist shoot them up game. I heard "no joda" probably thrice a minute. That and "verga", which is an exclamation equivalent to "fuck" (in Ven)
I figured that they were saying to each other, stop fucking with me, etc, it "fit", but actually what they were constantly expressing was surprise and shock at the manner they were getting killed/shot at. This also fits some outside situations where I heard it, where I thought "stop fucking with me" was being said as an expression of surprise, etc. That´s why I never particularly followed up on that colloqualism.
It is difficult to ascertain the proper spelling of colloqualisms, but since SPanish is a phonetic language, you can usually get it correctly. No one in Cali where they would pronounce or aspirate their s´s at end, or Caracas, where they would swallow or aspirate made the sound, therefore there is little doubt in my mind that the expression is "no joda".
then, there is also "no me jodas".
That is used when you are DIRECTLY speaking to someone, and is a very strong statement (though neither term would be used in polite company) to tell someone to stop bothering you, stop fucking with you. This would be almost the strongest thing you could say to a tout, for e.g. who would not leave you alone despite previous requests.
to accentuate what was previously said, it can never ever be no jode, or no me jodes, because that would violate an ironclad grammatical rule about the negative imperative.
for e.g.
el me molesta - he´s bothering me
no me molestEs! - don´t bother me!
estoy perdido - I am lost (from the verb perder)
no te pierdAs! - do not get lost!
so hopefully we have both learned something and I apologize if I came across as arrogant or condescending, I inevitably get into full sarcastic mode when I see people on forums such as this one post stuff on foreign languages, because 90% of the time, they don´t have a fucking clue (kind of like W claiming or media claiming he knows Spanish) Clearly you did, and I was wrong, so please accept my heartfelt apology and mea culpa.
speaking of doctors and medicine
Hey Loco!!
I had a little accidente and injured my shoulder, so I've been on a little R and R lately in the US.
Just got the doc's permiso to head down south! Gracias a Dios!
Hope to bump into you guys ... Loco y Catire
I went to the drugstore today to inquire about some fairly well known antibiotics that some of us might need from time to time.
I got what I wanted, 3 pills of 500 mg for 7000 pesos (this was generic, the brand name costs 28000 pesos). Therefore I paid $3.50 US for something and it took me 30 seconds.
Now let´s compare this to the fucking scam pulled on people in the "home of the brave and land of the free".
I have to make a fucking appointment with some quack, for which I have to wait at least several days.
then, you wait at least 30 minutes, often past your appointed time to see the quack who will see you for 3 minutes and in effect tell you what you already know and prescribe what you already knew he´d prescribe. You or your insurance company will be charged $100 US or more for this "visit".
then you go the fucking pharmacy, you have to wait at least 20 minutes for them to "fill your prescription" and when you finally get it, probably even the generic version will cost you at least $15 US.
so let´s compare the experience and the hassle and the cost.
I can´t wait until some assclown customs officer asks me about these drugs I am bringing back for personal use so I can unload on his clown ass.
(it´s technically illegal to bring back drugs to the US for personal use, but so long as it´s for personal use (in terms of quantity) the FDA has never prosecuted anyone for such a thing.). I suppose I won´t unload on the assclown because technically he could take my shit away.
but this is one of the things that really fucking pisses me off.
Ricker if you want to "bump into me", you will have to call me (hopefully you have my local number, or PM me, email me and tell me where, what time to meet in advance)
