I think you should do some research on the word gringo. I was in Cali this last weekend and was with a group of Colombians at a baseball event and the word gringo came up, we were all drinking and I asked what they all throught of gringo's, one guy stood up and said and I quote, remember its not me who said this, "los gringo's no tiene madre"!
The hole group laughed including me and as I new the true meaning of what it means.
Aussie Greg
That's funny! Some of the confusion probably comes from the way "gringo" is used in Mexico and parts of Central America. In those places, unlike Colombia, gringo does specifically mean someone from the U.S. My ex-Mexican girlfriend used to get a kick out of telling her paisanos I was from Australia (I'm really from USA) and then she and her friends would start bashing the Pinche Gringos. None of that applied to me, of course, since I was "Australian, " and Australians aren't gringos. Although Mexicans will tell you otherwise, in my opinion the word gringo as they use it is a slur. Maybe some of them don't know it, like some southerners in the 1960's would use the "N" word and not know any better. But the educated ones, the ones that are still pissed off about how we "stole" Texas and California and invaded their country a couple of times a hundred years ago, they know better.
Anyway, you get an estadounidense who's used to that and he goes someplace like Colombia that doesn't have a history of "Yankee oppression. " If he hears the word gringo he doesn't realize that it's just another way of saying "white person who doesn't speak Spanish like a native."

Next semester I wanan go abroad for school. Has anyone been to this university?
How is it, how hot are the girls there, and is a fun place?
Any advice would be awesome. Thanks guys heres the link to the university.
Hi Slamcity7777,
I live in Medellin and I have a business here (check out my other posts if you want to know what kind of business), so I'm obviously biased, but let me tell you what different friends told me about Bogota and how it compares to Medellin:
The Climate
The climate in Bogota is A LOT colder than in Medellin, because of the higher altitude. In Medellin, the temperature is juuuuust right all day and night all year around. Not so in Bogota.
The People
I've also been told that the people are a lot colder in Bogota (can that have to do with the climate?) and not as friendly.
The Entertainment
I also heard that there is not as much entertainment as in MDE. Bogota seems to be more of a business town, whereas MDE has two faces: People are busy with work from Monday to Wednesday, but from Thursday to Saturday the town turns into a party town, and Sunday is quiet and dedicated to the family. So it's important to be in MDE from Thursday to Saturday, if you want to do more than just hitting the casas. Very few options on Sunday, BTW.
The Scene: Just browse this site. Plenty of good info.
Safety:
Medellin is relatively safe. Especially in Poblado there is a lot of security. I feel safer here than in many American cities. Still watch out and don't be stupid. The other parts off Medellin are a bit less safe, but you should be fine in Belen, Laurelis or Envigado, too. I wouldn't advice you to stay in the Centro. Even Colombianos avoid the Centro, especially at night. Unless you're REALLY up for an adventure.... Also stay away from Bello unless you have a Colombian wing man and you really know what you're doing.
Let me know if you have any questions.

BTW, if you'd like to rent a room, I'm renting out rooms. Check them out here:
http://internationalsexguide.info/forum/showpost.php?p=850050&postcount=147
I'ld agree with most of that. Except for the bit about entertainment. Bogota has far more choices for clubs, pubs, restaurants etc. Bogota has more of everything
As for safety both cities have dangerous parts but you won't go there.
The word gringo according to The Word Detective most likely comes from the spanish meaning " any foreigner or "unintelligble gibberish". A second theory is that during the Mexican US war the yanks sang a song called "Green go the Lilacs" or something similiar. Still another theory is that the US soldiers wore green uniforms during the Mexico US war and the Mexicans would taunt them yelling"Green Go". Looks like the name stuck but I agree that any caucasian regardless of nation is probably referred to as gringo.
Slamcity7777, here is my vote:
Message Parlor: Loutron if you're not on a budget, Energy if you are Privado: No vote here. I have contacts, but won't share them here. Kind of defeats the concept of Privado. Unless I misunderstood something.
Stip Club: Fase II (not great, but still the best of what's available).
Reg Club (with working and or normal girls): Babylon at Las Palmas on Thursdays, Carbonsito in Laurelis on Saturdays (no working girls in either one though).
Bars (with working and or normal gils): The bars at La Bota in Envigado. There are lots of bars in Sabaneta (La Doctora), which are also fun.
Escort Services (I added that one): Girlfriend4AWeek (ups, couldn't resist)

Thanks and I look forward to reading your opions and ideas.
If your time is limited and all you want to do is monger, Hit the casas in the day, 2 or 3 of them. If you find something you really like get their cell phone number for after work. They all love to hang out after work and party and clubbing then banging. You might even find some real gems who actually looked very decent getting dressed up so people won't easily recognize you as the tourist gringo and his prepago. Option #2 street girls. Option #3 Strip Club girls but very very expensive. I don't think you are going to have enough time to romance then bed the NON PROS.
I've decided on Medellin for a quick getaway from April 11 until the 15th. It'll be my first time. I've RTFF'd but I'm looking for some insight.
I'm only there for 4 nights so I'd like to make the most of it. It's been a while since I've covered new territory. I've narrowed it down to Poblado but have some questions. I like the option of bringing girls back to my room rather then just having the hour in a club, is an apartment a better option then a hotel for this? I was looking at VIP or maybe the Mansion, but I thought I saw the Mansion does not allow visitors. Can anyone confirm and let me know what their best experience was their first time? I'm looking to spend $50 to $100 for a room.
I'd like to stay where there is someone who can point me in the right direction. I speak okay spanish but would like a little assistance here and there. Basically, I'm looking for a recommendation on where to stay, somewhere I could meet fellow punters would be great. I just got this opportunity and don't have too much time to plan, any assistance would be appreciated.
If there's anyone who would like to meet up, first beers on me. I've spent time in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Costa Rica and a few others, I'd be happy to swap stories and info. I'm 36, laid back and looking forward to a good time.
Thanks!

Dude that sounds like a bet to me!! Jajjjajjajjajaaa(ha ha in spanish) I am young, funny, charming, speak solid spanish, and RICH in South America!!
I'm looking for both non and reg girls, but when it comes down to it I'm not picky!!
Thank you for those board members who ventured an opinion for my question and I would like to hear more
Colombia that doesn't have a history of "Yankee oppression. "
Uh, except for when we started a fake revolution and stole the entire province of Panama from them. That was a bit oppressive. Methinks the history of Colombia would be different if they had a nice revenue-producing canal.
Sheesh
Tiny12, "Yankee oppression. "
My ex-girlfriend for two years Monica was one of the ring leaders of leftist students at University Antoquia, she used to don a black balacarva each time they protested, both her parents are members of ELN and her sister was killed by police at one of the student protests at the University years ago.
She would have a different view of Yankee Oppression in Colombia mate, thanks for your version on Gringo, its all very interesting.

Hi GoodFella,
If you're in Medellin for the first time, you definitely want to be in Poblado, as close to Parque Lleras as possible. You have more freedom in an apartment than in a hotel. Some hotels accept visitors, others might not. They might require you to register the girl and they might charge you extra. It might just be an awkward situation. In an apartment, you typically have a 24/7 portero who controls access to the building, but they normally don't ask too many questions, as long as you accompany the girl. You might want to make sure that you're in a building which is "Gringo" tested. Also make sure that your girl "behaves" as long as you're not in the apartment yet, otherwise the neighbors might give the owner of the apartment a hard time.
The best of both worlds might be to share an apartment: You have the freedom of an apartment and the extra space, but the owner of the apartment can show you around and show you the ropes or help you out if needed. I happen to rent out rooms in my apartment. Check out the details here: http://www.vacationrentalsmedellin.com. Drop me a line if you're interested. I'd be happy to show you around.
Whatever you choose doing, have a good time!
Regards,
Medellin Fan

Thanks!
Hello GoodFella,
I suggest you go and read the thread titled Medellin Hotels and Rental Apartments. You will find alot of the information I am sure you are looking for. You will also find my recommendation for you, as I believe you cannot find a better choice in Medellin, especially for the cost and the personalized service you will receive, which is at Frank Casio's "My Place". His contact information is on that thread, and you can also send him a p. M, since he is a member here on the ISG.
Have fun!
