Strange comment. WTF does the Iron Curtain have to do with it? Finland has never been a communist country. Always one of the most consistently democratic and law-abiding nations in the world.
You will offend one of our new posters with that sort of careless talk.
Well, at that time, in the 80's, there were many Russian mobs operating there looking for western passports. At least, that's what the cops in Helsinki told me at the police station. Finland, as you may know, in those days, was quite different via a vis the Russian connection, compared to Sweden, Norway or even Iceland. Yes, I have visited and done business in all of those countries and most of the European countries many times. And have been to all major European cities lots and lost of times. I'm an internationalist, very attuned to politics and business and cultural issues in all these courtries. Have logged mote than 5 million frequent flyer miles. Worked in both airline industry and then mostly in consumer financial services. Managed a large global business with a very sizeable marketing budget which necessitated detailed analysis of the demographic, psychographic and other related data. May not seem it, but I have seen how things have changed since the 80's, as I am sure you have too!

Thanks, interesting reply, and I accept your very tactful put-down humbly but if they were plagued by Russian criminals then it must be a lot worse now the mafias have a free hand and with minimal border control.
Over and over I see guys posting on ISG asking if their laptop will fit into a safe. I have been around the world and have never seen a hotel safe big enough to fit a laptop into it. Even the Senty I have in my house will not fit my laptop, a netbook yes. But fear not. There is not a rash of people going into hotel rooms and stealing laptops. Where ever I go I always leave mine out on the desk and plugged in so that my downloads can complete. I may lock the desktop, but have never found a reason to hide or put my computer under lock and key.
I have stayed at a number of chain and non chain hotels like LeMeridien, Movenpick and various others around Africa and Asia where I was able to put my 17 inch laptop inside the safe (you have to angle it in diagonally). These safes are generally black in color whereas the smaller ones are tan in color. I always drop back by my room at abnormal time if I am staying someplace for more than just a few days.
My laptop is my livelihood so I never just leave it out unattended. But that aside, I think it high time I get my tail to DR.

Anyone hitting the Jazz Festival this year? Been getting a lot of emails and texts about it. I think it starts tomorrow. I thought about going but opted for Colombia instead.

A few guys from this board are also attending but I will let them report their own version. Also my Uncles went last week and bragged about a couple new spots that I will personally check out. My Uncles swore me to secrecy but I know you guys won't tell anyone LOL.

I placed an ad on Craigslist in the DR in Spanish along with my photo that reads "Looking for a friend / guide that is thin in Sosua for a week" and received an E-Mail from a 26 year old lady. I then spoke with her on the phone and she told me she lived in Santo Domingo. I had a hard time understanding her Spanish and we exchanged E-mails. She told me she couldn't really travel to Sosua but knows four girls that live in the Puerto Plata area that would stay with me for $ 5,000 DR Pesos for a 24 hour period. She sent the photos of the girls that looked to be in their twenties to me and they where all attractive, not black but caramel color skin, and thin like I asked for. She also reconfirmed the pricing for these chicas. Wondering if any one has experience with something like this, and does $ 5,000 DR Pesos seem reasonable. I told her that I would have to try the girls out to see if their was any chemistry of course and am tempted to try one or two of these girls out.

Is there any reason why you couldn't have used Dominican Cupid, Badoo, or Tagged. Com to set up your own connections instead of purposely allowing yourself to get gouged for 5000 pesos?

I don't think 5,000 pesos for 24 hours is really so much for 24 hours when the TLN rate on the street is 3,000 Pesos. Of course everything would have to be off the charts to wife up with one chica. Will try Badoo and Tagged which I have never heard of. If I end up paying a 1,000 pesos for a day more than I should, well I can easily afford the $25.
-
And let me guess who told you the TLN rate on the street was: a chica you were trying to pick up off the street for TLN.

If you are thinking is a good deal cool, however, I think 5000 pesos is a lot of up front money. This can go wrong in so many ways. What if you guys get along and you pay her, then you find out the sex is bad. Not only is that 5000 pesos wasted, but now you got to feed her and she will be hungry, or you throw in the towel- cut your time and losts. Have you told the chica what all you want to do with her. It sounds like you are paying for her time and not sex. However, you may get a winner! I think if you go to Sosua you will meet the girl you want that will give a better deal! You can keep the Cupid chica for back up.
And let me guess who told you the TLN rate on the street was: a chica you were trying to pick up off the street for TLN.
About every report on this board over the past three months has been saying that the majority of the finer nicer looking chicas will go for 3,000 TLN even though they may ask for more initially. I haven't been to Sosua in a few years but am aware that the fat, ugly, and some of the Haitains will go for less. I'm not going to fret over 1,000 pesos or $ 25 over a chica for a day, however I won't pay over the market rate either. That's why I solicited other members input as to what they thought and your response was I was being gouged and might of relied on a chica from the street for my information. If I lived in the DR I wouldn't even bother with the girls on the streets, however when you travel 3,000 miles and only have a week, you don't have the luxury of a lot of time so I want to have as many options lined up in advance as possible. I think several other members on this board would concur with me.

This is ridiculous. The North Coast is awash with chicas. Come down, meet them in person, spend at least a few hours with one before committing to a longer stretch. If you are a typical newbie:
1 out of 10 will be disaster, will give as little service as possible and will want money in advance, maybe some sort of con-woman or, at worst, thief. Unpleasant experience. Get rid as cheaply as you can and put it down to experience. The more trips you make the better you will learn to spot these bad apples but you cannot spot them "online".
4 out of 10 will be routine fucks. Nothing memorable and you will be done with her after you have busted a nut. Get rid for 1000 to 1500 pesos.
4 out of 10 will be enjoyable sex and company. You might go on to spend a day or a night with her, but you will be ready to try someone new after that. You might want to see her again so take her number. 3000 peso plus meals.
1 out of 10 will the sort who make newbies fall in love with them. Excellent at her job and well worth the 5000 a day you will spend in cash, gifts and meals.
Note that the chance of your meeting this sort of chica is 1 in 10 at best. 1 in a 100 for anyone you meet on Cupid, Badoo, etc, and 1 in a 1000 for anyone you meet through Craigslist.
You cannot beat meeting in person and making a gradual assessment. Could still go wrong but it improves your chances a lot.

("Pendejo" is the local word). As a newbie you will be overcharged and you will be (hopefully mildly) conned. No shame in that, we all go through it. But if you start off defeatist you will be overcharged far more and could be a mark for a more serious con.

There is a reason why the standard rates are what they are. Just like everything else supply and demand.
