Is that a vaccine or a pair of rubber gloves? Vegan diet does 73% better on COVID outcomes. That's a better long term result than Pfizer. What gives? Judging from your comments and how you interpret those numbers, I think you do not fully understand what effectiveness is (same goes for your buddy Elvis and his 39%) and how it informs policy. Not trying to ridicule you, but since you asked for comments, here are a few.

A vaccine with 0% effectiveness against infections (and imagine the headlines, the outrage, Fauci to the gallows!) could hypothetically still be one of the best vaccines ever. For example, if it kept you out of the hospital and completely prevented transmission (incl variants) from you to other people. Ethical concerns aside, Darwinism could then run its course among those who choose to remain unvaccinated, and that would be that. The point is that a) there is a ton more that informs policy than a vaccine's effectiveness against infections, and b) you can't use effectiveness alone to push against vaccine recommendations, that would indeed be a fallacious argument.

Also, effectiveness per se is not super helpful in policy decisions, since it is a relative risk (in the paper you cite, the calculations are based on hazard ratios). What you ideally want to have are absolute risks, which are much harder to come by because they depend on many things such as the time frame we are talking about, what variants we are looking at and how transmittable they are, your environment, the prevalence of the virus, etc. So the effectiveness doesn't tell you how likely or unlikely you are to get infected, it tells you how much less likely you are to get infected relative to some comparison group over the course of the study (and that can also get dicey, more on that below). You also need some sense of absolute risk to estimate the basic reproduction number R0, which is what you really want to know for public health recommendations (if R0 is less than 1, the virus is not finding enough hosts to infect, and the incidence goes down).

I think it is reasonable to conclude from Figure 2 a in the paper you cite that it appears to get progressively harder to protect the upper respiratory tract, due to waning of antibodies (and this is where the booster shots come in). But you also have to be extremely careful with soft endpoints such as viral infections, especially when you use electronic health records. A fairly sizeable fraction of infected people are completely asymptomatic and might enter the records as never infected. That can especially change the composition of you comparison group over time, and lead to a decrease in the estimates of effectiveness (just like in Figure 2 a) even if there was no waning of antibodies and your protection didn't change. This is not trivial stuff.

Point being: when you want to communicate something about effectiveness, there is always a ton of context. It doesn't help at all to just knock out a number and amplify stuff you read somewhere without understanding the meaning of it. Be better. And dare to think for yourself.
