Two hours ago I left the Pizza Company and was driving down Beach Road. There were some damn good looking chicks out. All of them were across the street though sitting on their motorbikes talking with each other. Maybe the police was out earlier on the beach side or something.

If so, I'm betting the cop you went to hand your IDL card to didn't want to lose face by having to admit he couldn't read the document. Same thing goes with speaking Thai, sometimes its best to pretend you don't understand Thai and they'll go out of there way to save face.

That might have been the case in the past? But many now have been taught to recognize the permit, yes rarely will you find one that can actually read one. For years I just didn't want to go through the hassle to get a license so I had the I. Permit, one day on the Darkside I was pull over the guy actually can read some, said you got the most Endorsement I have ever seen in one of these books. He said you have lived here so long should get a Thai license. Now that I have got one I rarely get stopped not sure what that is all about? Some of the most common area's they do stops are 2nd Road both sides just before Mikes shopping Mall, right where Kiss is located. At night. The corner of Pattaya Tai and 2nd Road, Wednesday night the check point was huge with Giant Cone lights and everything stretching into Pattaya Tai the location of the Temple. There is also a check point on 3rd road, as you are making a left turn on Pattaya Tai near the 7/11. Also be careful of those signs that say " Waiting light left turn? " it actually means no left turn when red, if you want to make one pull forward a bit to see if there is a check point before doing so. If you live on the Darkside, going home on Pattaya Tai / Sukhumvit they are doing Breath test. Saturday night I saw the lights ahead and made a detour into a side street.

I have the motorcycle endorsement on my International and my State Drivers License. I was told at the Triple A Office that I had to present my Home State Drivers License as well and that it had to have the Motorcycle endorsement. So everything is legit on my end. Actually, I was stopped at Pattaya Thai and 2nd Road. And I have seen the large red light triangles set up recently near that location.
As for the Police Officer being able to read or not. That really isn't a concern of mine. My job is to comply with officials and their directions. If you had seen the International License I was talking about. You would know that it would only take you seeing it once and you would recognize them with no problem. Of course you have to open it and see what endorsements are marked. But for what ever reason I was sent on my way prior to opening my license. Oh, and part of that $88 fee comes with a one year road side assistance back in the States. Along with a laundry list of services. So it's a little more value then you give credit for Breadman. The actual License is only $15 with an $8 charge for the two photos they took. I realize $23 US might be a lot for you to pay. But for me, no. Plus it's the right way to do it.
I just left my tailor. He said a Black American guy paid US$1000 (35,000 baht) for a Russian chick last month. I said bullshit. He said he was right there when the guy called the mamasan on the phone. He said he thought I might know the guy and is going to show me his picture tomorrow. I told him that I doubt that I know anyone that would spend $1000 on some pussy, or even $100 for that matter.

The reality is this. Before someone else brings it up for correction. The reference to the International License isn't a license at all! It is a Permit.
When you are buying a bike every year you must register the bike around the time of the purchase. Once done you get a sticker that is given to you for the bike for the following year. Along with the sticker you get a small receipt that is their so call insurance but the insurance isn't for 3rd party, it is basically to cover you for is your own injuries, the coverage is for something like10-15,000 baht. I was told by a nurse at Bangkok / Pattaya Hospital you can get coverage at any hospital in Thailand. Really not sure you have to pay up front first and get the paperwork for reimburstment From my experience I will take a stab at this that 90% of bike owners in Thailand do not have 3rd party, the only one's that might are the well off and Expat and I can 99.9% of the bike being rented do not have 3rd party. 3rd party is basically injury and damage to the other vehicle. That is why if there is a accident of any type you will see the Thai driver take off if possible! I've been in a few fender benders 100% not my fault, once they find out that I'm a Farang here it comes. There are a number of BIB, like to settle cases for their own kind like this but if you let them blame yourself for letting it happen. In my seat I have a small list of items translated for accidents I use it to point out to the offender what they did wrong, I have used this with the BIB once his jaw just dropped not knowing what to tell the Thai guy. I also keep a small handbook under my seat. Since there was no damage just needed to make a point I just got back on my bike and left. The first thing you should ask is if the other driver has a license, majority of the kids do not and many older guys don't or they are expired. As for 3rd party insurance you can buy one from 2,000 to 3,000 baht a year depending how much coverage you want. Don't believe everything you hear. When you say no insurance will ever pay... you are right to a point like I said majority do not have any. In a accident normal procedure you go down to the local station for the BIB to file a report. The Thai guy will sign what he needs to sign to say he will pay you. The I.D. they carried from my experience most likely is outdated long time ago. But the BIB have no way to check it out, the system isn't there they are still writing reports in a log book 50 years behind time. When you walk out the door it will be the last time you will ever see him do not hold your breath waiting for payment. Remember when you are scraping the bottom you aren't going to find much. Just write it off as a lost... that's why I do what the Thais do.. just keeping going as if nothing has happened.

Because before I had a Thai license, I had no problem with just using my USA license by itself without an International Driving Permit here or in any other country I have been to. As a matter of fact when I rent cars in other countries I do it using my Thai license and they don't even understand that.
FYI the Thai license for people on tourist visas is now good for 2 years instead of 1 year as it was before.

Guess you just haven't been around long enough! See for those brave enough to venture on one. It is the key in the mongering scene since it not only provide transportation it represents freedom. With one your options expands and if one doesn't know anything about the proper paperwork they can't Mongers instead spend time at the local police station paying fines which could limit a individual mongering options. Be patient and try to get the big picture next time.
