Yes, this should be taken to the racism thread. Bu,t I'd just like to say that whether you've been here 16 times or a hundred, as a visitor who only has temporary and short-term interaction with Thais, you're never going to know really how they truly feel. Thais can be extremely obsequious and put on that cloying, false smile and sugary sweet demeanor, all the while hating you. Trying to figure out how Thais truly think is hard enough for those of us who deal with them day in, day out. I think for those who come her for business or pleasure, even often have little chance of getting at the real nature of these silly, hypocritical people.

Indonesians for example are very good at it.

I don't intend to generalize but I happen to know quite a lot of Indonesians - one of my former girlfriends was from Jakarta.

Ok, always been a lurker here rather than a contributor and this is my very 1st post but have been going to Thailand for over 12 years for mongering so I'm certainly not wet behind the ears. Visited G spot last night with one of my mates and we had about 4 drinks each, bought a few lady drinks (tequilas), nothing too ridiculously extravagant and were presented with a bill for 6700 baht. We reckoned the bill was going to be around the 2500. 3000 mark and were obviously shocked at the 6700. When we laughed at the bill the server then got quite defensive about it saying we had bought "many" tequila which was a load of bollocks. I'm convinced she thought we were drunk, which we wern't. We paid the bill and left without leaving any tip. But not before the now nervous server offerred us free tequilas. One thing we did notice and should have queried at the time was our chitty definitely disappeared for 5 minutes or so without any explanation.

2 questions for the regulars. Is Gspot known for this (its always been one of our favourite bars over the years but will never go back now)?

And also, we suspected the tequilas the girls were drinking were actually water (we saw no pouring from the bottle, the drinks just turned up with the salt and lime). Anyone experienced this at all?

Any other opinions about Gspot would be welcome too, like I said before, its always been one of our favourite bars.

The Beer Garden on Soi 7 (formerly called the Bier Garten) is one of the classic Bangkok spots for punters to meet freelancers. I didn't discuss any prices, but I imagine 1,000 baht for a S/T would have been fine for Tic and maybe even less would be OK for Tac and Toe. Tic said she never went L/T because she had "baby to take care," but she probably also had a Thai husband or boyfriend at home as well. After we'd finished eating, I discretely passed a 100-baht bill to each of them. Tic hung back a bit after the other two had moved on, possible because we had established some rapport. She wanted my email address, but I said that wasn't a good idea. Instead, I gave her 200 baht more, saying it was "for your baby." She seemed astounded by such magnanimity and her reaction was another sign of the harshness of her life. She hugged me and almost began to cry. She then asked, "Why I never have customer like you?'

I guess she, like me, has a tendency to think too much.


A reminder:

The experience with White Dress and Tan Top reminded me of rules I'd learned long ago about dealing with freelancers, but had chosen to ignore in this particular case:
1) Unless you know the girl well, don't let her drink too much. (that you shouldn't drink too much yourself is the prime directive for all mongering situations which overrides all others).
2) If things show signs of going bad - or even if they don't feel right - call it off at the earliest possible point, preferably before going to your hotel.
The third rule I did follow:
3) Be firm with the girls, but never get emotional or show anger. NEVER, ever, under any circumstances, get violent or even threaten girls with violence. A little money will go a long way to restore peace and in the absolute worst case, summon assistance from Thais (hotel security, restaurant or bar staff, etc). DO NOT try to forcibly eject a girl from your hotel room except in the direst emergency. If it is absolutely necessary to kick a girl out and all else fails, leave the actual ejecting to a Thai.

For me, the most important reminder was that the time and hassle spent on F/Lers can far outweigh any money saved compared with what you pay at "sure thing" establishments.

If you are as seasonned as you say you are, why would you pay a bill you know has been tampered with? why not call the mamasan and ask her for the details of all the drinks? (they keep a bill for all drinks). Maybe the Waiter and bartender are running a scam and the mamasan doesn't know about it.
Leaving no tip is pointless if you were screwed by 3,000 thb because it probably went directly in the waiter's pocket.

Have not experienced this first hand but, this is Thailand so anything is possible. If in doubt, switch your tequila with her glass and drink it ;)

The very reason the bars promote "Tequilla" is its so easy to swap for water and too many pissed farangs never know their "girl" is drinking just water.

First lesson: DO NOT BUY TEQUILLA's. !

Buy them a "ladies drink" (which may or may not contain a little whisky) but when they or the server say "Tequilla" tell them NO THANKS.

These bars are not there to promote you happy evening, they are there to make money.

Second lesson: Pay your bar bill OFTEN if you stay in a place for a long time.

Server's or bars ripping people off is in line with how long you stay in there. The bigger your bill gets, the easier it is to rip you off. Make a rule to pay the bill each and every 2 rounds of drinks. You know what you've drunk, they cannot rip you off, and you just start a new bill if you want another round.

Often, the problem is not the server's ripping you off (as in directly to rip you off cause they want the cash for themselves). Please remember that.

Often the problem is DUMB ASS TOURISTS who think its funny not to pay the bill and leave. The bars owners do not accept this as an excuse, and so the servers must pay any unpaid bills from their salary. So what inevitably happens is the servers take any unpaid bills and dump them on people who are drunk as they can get away with it.

So remember, often this "rip off" is cause some other asshole has not paid their bill and left.

[/QUOTE]I have been frequently BG regularly since 2000. This last year that I have lived here in Bangkok I am at least a weekly patron. As is my style I make it a point to befriend the bar's staff and even though TIT, I make sure that I leave a significant tip. This has resulted in the staff becoming friendly enough to "keep me safe, " specifically warning me away from questionable ladies and scam artists. I do not punt every time that I go there because I am friends with many of the staff and actually like the food their (at least their Thai food). Since I speak Thai, I routinely hear interesting conversations on the part of many of the freelancers. Recently, within the last year, it seems that many of these girls are in some kind of formal or informal "association" with an older member directing their actions. And yes, the climate has changed. No more parrot and now a closed plumbing system. But it still has a unique flavor that interests me.

Bars in Soi cowboy where girls commonly drink a lot of tequilas like Long Gun or Doll's House, I can vouch that it isn't water. I have often taken over a girl's drink when she was too drunk to drink it.

Some bars have a sweeter strong alcohol drink which they call Tequila. It tastes too sweet to be tequila to me but then I'm no tequila expert. Maybe there is special tequila designed just for bar girls. Its not as stong or as sweet as Chartreusse (spelling?) for example.

After every order a bill should be placed in your buill holder. In a place that I don't trust I would check the bill after each order. This unfortunately means using my glasses and a mini light attached to my key ring.

Even when I have bought large quantities of tequilas for several girls and staff, I haven't ever exceeded 6K Baht so I would definitely say you got scammed.
I may have exceeded this figure on News Year's eve but at a more expensive bar and buying B52s, Sambuccas, etc. for 3 or 4 girls plus myself.

You should know roughly what your bill total will be before they give you the bill (and should also know how much money roughly is left in your wallet).
