Imagine How Foreigners See American tourists. . .
One guy said to see how locals see American tourists like yourself, imagine yourself naked and covered with $100 bills. The locals are drooling for some quick cash when they spot a naive tourist. If you dress like an obvious American. T-shirt, cargo shorts and sandals, you look like a 2 legged ATM machine to the locals. If you are driving an expensive SUV or 4 wheeled jeep, they know you have lots of $100 bills to be able to afford those wheels. Solution. Look at what the local middle class Mexicans are wearing or look at AMLO and copy his clothes. . . Then you will likely avoid problems with the local policia and mugger community. . . If you are getting pulled over and shaken down, somehow you are broadcasting a "I am a walking ATM machine" signal to the locals. . . And they are trying to make withdrawals from your wallet! Drive a beater and dress and try to look like a local to avoid problems. Some people however cannot help looking like a target. Elderly and Asians come to mind. Natural targets for mugger ratero types. Typical target from todays news: Another Asian man followed, then robbed in Alameda by four African Americans. . . The Asian community in the Bay Area is being terrorized right now by repeat violent attacks and or.
I used to drive in Tijuana nearly every day but I no longer drive in Tijuana at all. Things got particularly bad during the Trump admin when the crooked cops were going past collecting moditas and just doing "revenge stops". I have a business associate who is highly regarded in Tijuana and can "fix" tickets. Once I was stopped for making an "illegal right turn" (total bullshit) and I called him while the cop was shaking me down. He gave the cop a tongue lashing and the cop hopped on his bike and fled the scene. But I just got tired of calling him or taking my tickets to him so I stopped driving in Tijuana.
Aside from crooked cop shakedowns, I've had license plates stolen (a local pastime) and wheel covers stolen (another local favorite). I just got tired of all the BS. Uber and taxivans are your friends in Tijuana. When I did drive, I rented a car in the US (would never drive my own personal vehicle in Tijuana) and I never got stopped with non-California tags. Maybe a coincidence but, if so, a large one.
If you've never been pulled over, you must look very Mexican or be very lucky.
