OK, I've been RTFF for a few weeks pulling information together for my cherry trip to Vietnam. I'll be arriving to Hanoi, and my current plan is to spend only one or at the most 2 nights in Hanoi before heading to Haiphong and Do Son for some days, then off to other places. Thanks to the many excellent informative postings here from MC, Wendella, Luke, and a bunch of the other senior fellows, I have a pretty good idea of what to expect, what to pay, where to find it, etc. I'll be traveling solo, and although I do enjoy having a wingman, such can go sour easily when the unexpected occurs (or can save your butt when the unexpected happens also).

I have been searching for a hotel for my first night on arrival from the airport around midday, and although many are listed here, due to local traffic / taxi / transport etc logistics it is unclear to me what would be the most convenient location to book my hotel (I only book the first night or at most 2, then wing it as I find stuff on location). After a very long trip from North America, I'll be pretty wiped, so need to chill for a bit of time on arrival, meaning easy / straightforward finding and check-in processes, good A/C (though maybe not needed the last week in October?) comfortable bed, and I usually like a hotel with a safe in the room although I do understand in Hanoi I would be unlikely to bring a girl back to my main room (ST hotels used). Unless one of the hotel with onsite clubs / discos / KTV where you can bring a girl upstairs, although that is usually pretty expensive (and then a safe is absolutely a requirement). Note that I speak zero Vietnamese, although I do speak broken mandarin, and a smattering of European languages (fluent in English).

So any recommendations for a well-located hotel with these kinds of characteristics would be much appreciated. Note I get all the basic info (rates, amenities, etc) from the booking sites; here I am looking for easy availability and convenience for our hobby, transportation convenience, etc. - intel from on the ground. I'll likely hit something like Massage 1 and the tam quats on Thuy Khue street, and of course other places so well described in the forum. But of course, the first night of arrival, I am not at my best due to the nightmare of economy air travel from one side of the planet to the other.

Arriving at midday makes things easier than arriving in the middle of the night. Avoid the taxis (400 k VND) and take the VietJetAir shuttle to the right after you exit the airport. If it is not there, you can ride the free shuttle to the domestic terminal where you should be able to catch the VietJetAir shuttle for 40 k VND to the city. The shuttle should take you to the center of town near the lake Hoan Kiem. From where the shuttle drops you off there are many hotels around the lake within walking distance. Really cheap hotels are available near St Joseph's Cathedral not sure if any are GF but a lot of backpackers stay in this area and to the north of the lake. Note: cheap hotels usually don't have in-room safes. There are also some nice hotels such as Hilton and Sofitel Metropole within a short taxi ride or 10-15 min walk. Staying around here is convenient because you can catch the shuttle to / from the airport but it isn't that great for your hobby. If you read the forum you know that Hanoi isn't the easiest place to get FS. You can get massage with extras pretty easily. Those types of services are mainly available near the south end of West Lake (Ho Tay) on Thue Khue street. Not sure how much you want to spend on hotel but there are nice places to stay around West Lake. If you want FS you're better off using those forum sites with ads for girls. Usually girls will want you to meet them at hotels on the outskirts of town. This is far from Hoan Kiem area and West Lake but you can take a taxi for less than $10 USD. It is a sleepy beach town with a crappy beach and the quality of girls is mediocre. Cheap? Yes. High quality? Not really. Any girl that is reasonably hot will likely move to Hanoi or Saigon to work. In summary, Hanoi is not a really good place for your hobby. Instead of spending time and money going to Do Son or spinning your wheels in Hanoi, take a trip to Saigon and you will have much better options. If you have to be in Hanoi then the Sheraton is nice but really isolated. I haven't stayed at Sofitel or JW Marriott yet but I would like to at some point. I usually stay in cheap hotels around Hoan Kiem for convenience and value.

It does saves you a 30-40 minute (one way) trip to Do Son.
