Getting a local SIM card is essential, especially if you want to use the internet on your smartphone. I find that being able to consult ISG is extremely useful.

When you arrive at BKK airport, go to any one of the mobile phone stores on Level 2. I used DTAC, and got a new SIM with a local number and 30 days of all you can eat local calling and internet access. This cost less than 900 baht, and was extremely useful.
