Huh? Ten years ago, Centaurus used to charge 240 Reais per session. Today, it charges almost 500 Reais. Prices doubled in Reais and trippled in US dollars.
Ten years ago, products made in Brazil were much cheaper than imported. Today, there is no much difference. For example, a brazilian 'after shave' product used to cost 3 Reias, whereas today it costs 18 reais (compared to 22 Reais for imported)
I am making comparisons on the last 2-3 years as going back to ten years means having so many factors to judge what effectovely created the price differences.
What I was mainly saying is that with some currency (and euro is one of them) getting weak and some local currencies getting stronger (reais) we have an increase factor that not necessarily come from the local retail prices.
Anyhow I do not want to get into too deep financial discussions as it is also not my area.

Inflation
The prices of several products went up drastically.
This is particularly true if we consider the value of property ownership or real estate. Some business that were well implanted are not able to survive. Take for example an institution like John Sehn. A German Bierstube. That was located in Moema (on Lavandisca). The owner was unable to cope with the inflation and he was forced to sell his restaurant.
I agree with most posters: it is in the price of hotel rooms that we can perceive the inflation.
Some items are still cheap: I think in particular of books (one of the main reason why I come to Brazil).
This year the situation of the Canadian dollar is particularly good: last year for R$ 200 you had 123$ CDN, this year it is 103$ CDN.

São Paulo is a city who distroys and rebuilt itself constantly.
Your exemple of the Johan Sen can not be taken as a rule.
Bar do Leo, another classical beer stube is still alive and very active! Even being located in the Boca do Lixo, the cheap hookers distric of São Paulo. It's a block away of the famous building at Rua dos Andradas 69! Always packed with people, on Saturdays, if you arrive after 10:00 AM you're going to drink your beer on the sideway!
After two lost decades, the 80's and the 90's, finally economic recovery arrived. So the climb of the price of real estate can not be taken as a mesure of inflation.
After two decades of stagnation real estate values in São Paulo recovered their true value. That reflects on the hotel rates!
This is a consequence of Brazil's economic status, and the growth of São Paulo.
The main reason that cost of living climbed so much for people who earn is USD is the dramatic devaluation of the USD against the Real.
Remember that before Lula took power, the exchange rate was USD 1, 00 = R$ 3, 85 and now, ten years latter it's USD 1, 00 = R$ 1, 94.
What hapened is that due to the economic crisis the USD lost his value. Compared to Switzerland Brazil is still a cheap country!
Specially the GdP's! But you must know your ways how to get a good cost / benefit! .
I think that in no other place in this planet you can get a hooker for USD 10, 00!
Abraços!

Hotel in Sampa
I am sorry to disagree, prices in Reais went up in recent years, irrespective of fluctuation of exchange rates.
Hotels I used to sleep in 3 or 4 years ago for R 175-185 are now R 225-245, for example.
Same applies to restaurants, taxis, etc. Particularly in Sao Paulo.
Albert, there are some good and budget hotels, but you must look after it.
I looked at www.revistamagazine.com.br Today and there are two cheap options near Av. Paulista / Av. da Liberdade and Metro stations Paraiso and São Joaquim:
Hotel Center Plaza.
R. Maestro Cardim 508 tel 55 11 3266 4166.
Rooms starting R$ 54, 89 / day breakfast included.
Hotel Century Paulista.
R. Teixeira da Silva 647 tel. 55 11 3882 9977.
Rooms starting R$ 185, 00 / day.
They are not located in the Jardins, but in a good area.
The same account for restaurants. There are many churrascarias rodízio where you can have lunch for R$ 20, 00. But they are not located in the fancy Jardins area!
But I agree that cabs became very expensive in Sampa!
Learn how to go by Metro!
It's cheap R$ 3,00, modern and clean, only avoid the rush hours!
Abraços,

Sampa hotels and flats
Dear Mongers,
Have a look on this site :
http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/239103
I don't know the place but location is not bad, it's near to the Metro Marechal Deodoro.
R$ 110, 00 per night!
Learn how to go by Metro!
Abraços,
I do have my Bilhete único! Each time I'm in Sampa I put money on that card and I gladly travel by bus and metro. Quick and efficient (note that habitually I travel outise the rush hours).
In the rush hours it can be a nighmare only to get out of a bairro! For example, last year it took me 2 hours to travel from my place (Araguari and Rouxinol) up to metro Santa Cruz. Habitually it takes me only 20 minutes to do it!

Sui Generis, you are almost a paulistano, so I'm not worried with you!
I'm trying to help a newcomer to avoid paying exorbitant taxi fares!
What I recomend is to go by Metro, drop at the nearest station to your detination and take a cab to your destination.
The problem with Moema is always this : in the rush hours is a nigtmere do go out of there! That's the reason I prefer the Av. Paulista region, at last you have the Metro, even if packed you'll move!
From where I live I can walk to the Metro CLínicas or Metro Paulista and I travel to the whole city by subway and \CPTM trains!

!
I'll be glad to have this title! A couple of years ago, there was a private section in the GP Guia and it was only accessible for a bunch of distinguished Paulistanos. Believe it or not but they included me in that group!
More seriously, I'm always eager to discover new aspects of Sampa and I do love it. In general paulistanos frowned at me when I tell them that I like to take my vacations in São Paulo.

Hotels & restaurants
Of course there are some budget hotels, but I am a little sophisticate ..... joking.
In case of restaurants you can go to "lanchonete" and save money.
What I have noticed is that price for GDP didn't go up like other prices.
Am I wrong?
Or, maybe I just paid too much years ago?
Anyhow, cost / benefit ratio for GDP is very high in Brazil compared to other countries.

Habitually the price for a TLN (overnight) is R$ 500 but, as everything else in this world, there are exceptions (it can goes up to R$ 1000). Definitely this is an area where you can exercise your negotiation skills. .
Club Model is very reliable and, to a certain extent, you can also trust Kissclass because, at least, the pictures of the girls are real and accurate.
