Just got back from a short hop to Havana, a few observations

1) Cuba is freakin expensive and it has to do with that "imaginary" exchange rate they use for the CUC the Euro = .88CUC and the C$ = .69 are you kidding me?!! anyways enough of my rant!

2) While there were the usual policias around, the professional girls were doing good business, saw many gringos at many bars doing quite well. The going rate is about $90 to $100 CUC for the pro's and they don't negotiate very much.

3) You should be able to score a non-pro for between $50 and $60CUC, the lowest I've had was $40CUC but haven't been able to replicate that too often so I consider it an outlyer.

4) If you don't mind getting off the beaten path, you can eat fairly cheaply in Havana but it's mostly chicken dishes.

As I've been going to Cuba for awhile, I never touch the pro's, yes they are attractive but the mechanical, business nature of the whole thing turns me off.

That said, a great anecdote about what makes Cuba such a great place. I have a very good friend in Cuba (who is very famous on the island) so we're out one night and a couple of his friends sit at our table and his friend is with his really attractive girlfriend. Of course I just admire her and think nothing of it. The next day, my friend approaches me and says simply "do you want her" of course I play dumb and say "who" and he says "the girl from last night" I say (because I am a silly North American at times "but she's got a boyriend" to which my friend laughs for about 3 minutes straight and then replies "everything is possible in Cuba" - of course this is all said in Spanish.

That evening she pops over we have a few glasses of rum and we end up having great sex for a couple of hours - total GFE - which is why I love Cuba, these women (the non pros) just know how to make a man feel good even if it's a man they barely know lol!

Very Later that night we run into them again at a disco and her boyfriend is being really cool and we're having a great time, so I whisper to my friend "does her boyfriend know" and he just smiles and winks. Now where else could that happen.

Anyhow, between Cuba and Colombia I get the best of both worlds, Colombia when I just want to have lot's of meaningless sex with stunningly hot women and Cuba when I don't mind chilling with the same stunningly hot girl for a whole trip (with a couple of impromptu lovers added for spice).

I've been a very long time since I've posted or responded in this forum, after a long hiatus, I am considering a return to Havana. I used to post semi regularly here back in the day and hopefully a few of the long time lurkers may remember some of my posts.

I was kinda pissed after the last trip almost 3 years ago because I got sick of the same old bullshit. Anything new under the sun? Last time I was there, most of the places were closed except Turquino and Casa de la Musica, the usual dives in Vedado weren't really worth going to. I've read most of the recent reports and still not sure of what to make of the situation there as compared to say 2-3 years ago when it was awful. I've been to Cuba many times and am fluent in Spanish. Any perpective on the current scene would be appreciated.

Things in Cuba go up and down from week to week, but if you look at it on a lengthier perspective, things are only going one way: Down. Had done so since the 90's, hell, probably since the 60's, but I wasn't around then. So if you thought it had turned for the worse three years ago, you won't like it now. Been there one or two times yearly since 1998 and I have never returned and found that the chica-scene had improved since last visit.

Still, I keep going back like some kinda drugged zombie. But that's mostly because I know so many girls there now. Gotta broaden my horizon one day.

Okay, guys, I haven't asked for help in here for a long, long time, but now I need some, so I hope you'll come through.

I've got about a 95% chance that I'll be doing an unexpected 14 days in Havana from around new years eve.

So I called both my regular casa and my regular back up casa today, and being peak season, they are of course both taken. Since I am picky and DO NOT want to end up booking some casa online through an agent who promises me gold and end up in a shithole where I can't bring my girls, I need your help.

Looking for an independent apartment in Vedado, preferably, but could be in Centro or Vieja. I can't live without a balcony/terrace. Must be super chica-friendly, of course, I don't even want the owners to have a carnet-policy. Just want to go in and out undisturbed with whom I want.

back to the topic at hand, the local bar scene around playa de este, via blanca & el trebol bar has been quiet for the most part for a long time, but when the younger italians over cologne themselves, dress up like they are going to a milan fashion show & drop 100cuc for a chica it does screw up the market

i love the local bars there, but they are local dives where locals hangout & should be treated as such, not like hollywood it places.

first of all, i would like to thank each and every senior member here who had helped me to have best time in havana. my special thanks go to amocuba, el cubanito, rock harders, wet nose, vedado fun and pegasus99, who had replied to all pm and helped me all the way. some of you find my review long and boring but i’m writing this review keeping all the first timers in mind (as i was once).

let me give you some introduction first and then i’ll go day by day. me and two of my friends went to havana for the week of dec 7 – 14. this was our first trip to cuba and got to say, we had a blast. we don’t speak spanish at all; maybe we only know the word ‘gracias’. as a firs timer, i did lots of research before i go there and that’s what made me to have a good time in havana. i read almost every single post about cuba in this forum and all worth the time i spent. to be honest, i was little hesitated to spend $20 to become a member in this forum, but i found out that $20 saved me more than $200 when i was in cuba.

i booked a casa/private apartment through one of the websites recommended by senior members here. i also made a back up reservation as i heard sometimes my booked casa won’t be available when we arrive there, which was true in our case. we paid $35 for each room as we wanted our privacy. maybe next time, we can negotiate the price for less as we will be directly dealing with the owner (no middle man).

as i mentioned earlier, our apartment was changed when we arrived in cuba. i guess it’s kind of common in these days. i would have to accept this happed for our good as we had the best owner. the owner is old, very cool and helped us all the way and gave us all the advice we needed. oh. did i say he invited some chicas for us as well? another thing. we never went to any clubs to pick up chicas while we stayed in havana. and of course we had chicas when we wanted.

ok. here is our experience day by day?

day 1 (sunday)

scam at the airport

unfortunately one of my friends had to get a different flight as our flight was fully booked. his flight supposes to leave 1hr early but for some reason it was delayed by 2hrs. so me and my other friend arrived in cuba early and went to currency exchange to change cad – cuc. i have to say this was our first mistake we made in cuba. this place is full of scam. after i changed the money, i asked for a receipt and she kept on saying "no credit card". i knew she is acting like she does not understand english, so i kept on asking her for receipt. finally she realized i wouldn’t leave without the receipt and gave the receipt. when i counted my money i was short of 20 cuc. i counted the money couple of times to make sure and still short of 20 cuc. all this time i didn’t leave the counter. i was just staying on the side of the counter while she was helping other people. when i gave the money back saying i’m missing 20 cuc, she took the money underneath the counter and quickly added the 20 cuc to my notes (i was able to see her hand reaching a different place). then she brought the money up and started to count the money with a look i’m so stupid and i can’t count money. this time of course i got the correct change. at the same time my friend changed his money at a different counter. after he changed it, i asked him whether he got correct change. he wasn’t sure as he wasn’t aware of these scams. i took my pda and punched the numbers, he is missing 30 cuc. again they didn’t give the receipt to him and he didn’t bother asking for it either. we went back to the counter and asked the lady to give the receipt. gave all the money back and said we are missing 30cuc. at the same time another canadian who sent his wife to exchange cuc-cad was fighting with the lady saying he didn’t get all the money and they cheated his wife. maybe since our accountant realized we might fight too, she said sorry and gave the 30cuc without any hesitation. at the same time i saw another chinese guy asking for receipt at my previous counter and i saw the lady playing same trick saying no credit card. he asked for the receipt twice and then said "oh ok" and left. all this happened when i was with my friend at his counter. i felt sorry for that guy as i couldn’t help him. after we finished i looked for that guy but he is already gone.

i won’t recommend changing all of your money at the airport. we later changed some money in a bank (hotel notional) and had no problem. also keep in mind they won’t change any damaged notes at the bank; they may at the airport. at the airport, change only what you need for the day and change rest of the money in a bank. always ask for receipt and check all the numbers carefully. when i came back to toronto, i noticed that they are asking to sign the receipt. so make sure you check the numbers before you sign the paper.

taxi from varadero to havana

we paid $90 for taxi from varadero airport to havana as viazul bus didn’t run at the time we arrived. we’ve booked the taxi/car through the same person who booked the casa for us.

first night in havana

when we arrived in vedado, we met our casa owner and the agent who booked the casa for us. it was almost 11:00 pm so decided to go to nearby restaurant & eat something. our agent also joined us and showed a nearby good restaurant which wasn’t that expensive. we paid 25 cuc for 4 people for steak dinner, beer and juice. after that we decided to go to a club and see what it looks like. on the way we found a club called "club tropical" which is not very famous. so we decided to drop over and see how it looks. our agent talked to the door man and told them we just wanted to take a look inside. no problem. went inside and saw only 1 or 2 good looking chicas and lots of guys. club was in a small basement and it was full of smoke (we all don’t smoke). we decided to walk out as it didn’t look like a good atmosphere for us. went to our apartment and went to bed straight as we all were tired.

day 2 (monday)

food shopping

today we met our guide who was recommended by someone. we told him, we want to cook for our self so he took us to different market to buy different things. some we paid in local peso, some in cuc. we were there in a bad month as 2 hurricanes wiped out all the cultivation. in most of the market, we were only able to find sweet potatoes and tomatoes. since our guide knows where to look for, he was able to find what we wanted.

chicas for the day

we asked our guide to see if he knows any girls. he said no problem. he invited 3 girls (white 9/10, white 9/10 and white 7/10). the one i wanted looked like a pro. she was 9/10 slim, blond and gorgeous. our guide asked us to negotiate the price so we all went to our individual rooms. i asked mine how much and she said 65 cuc. i said no way and she wouldn’t go below 50 cuc. even though this was my first girl and desperate to get fucked, i kept in mind what the other members told me in this forum. i sticked with 30cuc and she said no. finally i asked 45 cuc for 2hrs, she didn’t want it. i said fuck off and told her to get out of the house. by that time, i knew she only cares about money and i won’t get any satisfaction at all. she asked for 5 cuc for taxi which i didn’t want to give it to her. since i didn’t want to get my guide into any trouble, i gave her the 5 cuc and asked her to get out. after she left, my guide arranged a mulatto for me. she was 8/10, slim, nice ass, attractive and tall. she took care of me as i’m her prince. i guess its well worth for sending the other ***** home. i gave her 30cuc and some gifts and she was very happy.

we went for shopping for more food in the morning. our guide took us to different places where we can buy what we wanted. it was so hard to find the foods and i’m sure we would have only eaten sweet potato and tomato everyday if we didn’t have our guide. everything is controlled in cuba and it’s very hard to buy the foods you want, even if you have the money for it. we had to line up for few minutes to buy bread at a bakery. we got about 8 breads for 1 cuc (cheap) but i heard sometimes they control it so that each person can only get 1 bread. we were lucky on that day. also were able to find 10 lobster tails for 10 cuc (nice deal). if you go to restaurant, you will be paying more than 10 cuc for each tail.

woke up and went to beach (easter beach). our guide arranged the taxi but he didn’t come with us. taxi cost 16 cuc each way. beach wasn’t too crowded. as soon as we picked 2 chairs and umbrella, a guy came and asked for 6 cuc. he said if we buy something from the restaurant then it would be free, but we didn’t feel like eating or drinking anything, so we paid 6 cuc. stayed there for a while and then picked up our stuff and went further away from crowd. we stayed near some coconut trees where we had some coconut water and good swimming. it was private as nobody was around. then we came back to the same place as we were hungry. ordered lobster dinner (12 cuc each), coconut with rum and some beer. i would have to admit the food was good and worth 12 cuc as we all were full. while we were waiting for the food, we had a music band starting a conversation with us. they said they can find anything for us. including girls. while we were talking a mulatto came to us and said hi. she had big ass and nice tits but at that time, we weren’t really interested. she stayed by our place the whole time we were eating. we didn’t make any eye contact as we weren’t really interested. later we waited by a phone booth for one of our friends as he was buying some souvenirs. two black beauties came by and laughed at us and shown some interest. they did ask something in spanish which we didn’t understand. they pretended to be dialling the phone at the public phone booth for a while but since we didn’t show any interest, they left.

we went to a massage. yes a massage in havana. don’t be mistaken, this is nothing more than typical massage. lady is old (40’s) and she is professional massage therapist who works for government. she lives in a typical cuban house which is not that clean. i was little disappointed with that but other than that her massage was all right. i wouldn’t say it was very good. we paid 15 cuc for 40 min massage. i wasn’t interested but one of my friends wanted to try and that’s why we all went with him. i might have the contact info for massage and if anybody interested, pm me.

copellia ice cream and food

later we went to copellia ice cream near la rampa as we heard it’s very famous with locals. i wasn’t too impressed as it’s just typical ice cream. we ordered some cheese pizza near la rampa as we were vegetarian for that day. i got to say cheese sticks/bread in canada is way better than their pizza. but again i have to admit we didn’t go to cuba for food and we all know how bad the food in cuba. i’m not complaining about it but i’m advising the first timers to be ready for it. i found ham and cheese sandwiches are better than pizza or other typical food.

no chicas today

again we did get calls from previous girls, but we said we are busy and wasn’t interested for the night. we decided to not to take a chicas today as we were all tired walking and having relaxed massage. we just came home cooked dinner and ate. straight to bed.

day 6 (friday)

booking viazul bus

we all left home to book viazul bus to return to airport on sunday. later we found out we could have done that through phone. they will just write down you name on a sheet. you can only buy ticket 1hr prior to departure. look at viazul website for contact info. it’s always good to book in advance as they might try to get some bribe if you go couple of minutes before departure. i’ve seen a guy asking for seats which they said they don’t have any. but our bus went only half full.

picked up 3 chicas on the street

anyways while we were waiting for flag a taxi, we saw 3 cute chicas passing us (white 8/10, chinese mix 9/10 & mulatto 9/10). we later realized they are the same chicas we whistled at when they went past our apartment earlier. at that time they didn’t even look back. back to story. asked our guide to call them and ask them if they are interested in joining us. he followed them and told our interest. no problem, we exchanged number and asked them to come around 6:00 pm.

finally got a taxi to go to viazul, at the same time our owner who went for shopping came back. told him we are going out will be back. at the same time we forgot to monitor the taxi meter. we were too busy talking about the girls that we saw. when we reached our destination, taxi driver asked for 7 cuc. we knew it wasn’t that far and looked at the meter, he didn’t turn it on. didn’t have any choice, gave him 7 cuc. guys. always make sure the taxi meter is turned on. after we booked our seat we decided to take a bus tour of havana. took a taxi to revolution square and this time made sure the meter is running.

havana tour

we heard havana has tour buses which started only couple of months ago. there are 3 routes – t1, t2 & t3. you only pay 5 cuc for all 3 tours and you can use that pass as many times as you want during that day. first we took the t1 route to see old havana, central havana, malecon, central park and harbour etc. it was a double decked bus with top part open. i got to say it was well worth 5 cuc tour. we took lots of pictures. we saw a good looking chica in central park. she laughed at us and shown some interest but it was too crowded and too much police. while we were on the tour bus, we saw the same 3 girls (we suppose to meet tonight) near malecon. they were too excited than we were. they shouted and waved hands at us. they also said something in spanish and showed 6 fingers. we figured out. they wanted to see us at 6:00 as we scheduled.

anyways, after our t1 tour, we took t2 tour with same ticket. it was so boring and nothing to see. it’s a normal bus which takes you to marina hemingway through miramar. i wouldn’t recommend this t2 tour for anybody. we didn’t take t3 as we didn’t have much time. i heard t3 will take you to playas del este (eastern beaches). if you want to save money going to beach and seeing old havana then this is the best bang for bucks.

after all the girls left, our guide said he know some good local restaurant where we can pay in local peso. we invited our owner as well. we all had pizza, spaggati, sandwich, ice cream and espresso for about 5 cuc (100 peso). beer and juice were in cuc. i had to agree the pizza were much better than the one we had for cuc. this place is kind of tricky as if you stay in patio, you pay everything in cuc but if you go inside the restaurant, you pay in local peso.

day 7 (sunday)

my friend fucked a b’day girl

it was a birthday to one of the girl my friend fucked before. we asked our owner to invite her in the morning, so we can give some gift and later invite for night. our plan was to invite her for the night and cut a piece of cake to surprise her. we have already booked her friends for the night so we thought it would be good to throw a party on our last night. unfortunately birthday girl couldn’t join us as she had to join her family party. she came in the morning and wanted to make out with my friend. he wasn’t really interested as he just woke up. she kept on asking me to tell my friend to come to bed with her. finally she brought the mood for him and they both went into the room. later my friend told me he only paid 20 cuc for her.

keep in mind, we never went to any clubs/discos to pick up girls, although we thought about it couple of times. we saved lots of money on that and avoided any police hassles. all most all the girls we had are non-pros and i can imagine we would have only picked the pros if we went to clubs. we saved on taxi, drinks and entrance fee which range from $10. $35. i did found some girls through badoo.com and other sites. i promised them to call when i arrive in havana but since we had much good looking girls when we wanted, i didn’t bother calling them. if you find a girl online then you don’t know what to expect as they might be students or not into dating. you might have to spend some time with them before you take them to bed, which is ok if you are staying in havana for 3 weeks. but if you want to go to bed straight and don’t have much time to fool around, then i wouldn’t recommend you to find girls online.

there are few obstacles you should expect when travelling to cuba. i would recommend you to be ready to face them. nothing is perfect in this world so you have to adjust /adapt to it. first of all, there is too much pollution. even thought i like the old cars, i hate the smoke that comes out it. for the first few days, i felt some pain in my throat. i took shower 3 or 4 times a day thinking it was the hot weather but later found out it’s the pollution i’m not used to. anyways after few days, i got use to it. no big deal.

second, there are scams everywhere. you should know it’s a third world country and people will try to get every penny out of you. if you be careful then i guess you should be ok. i don’t mind giving money to poor people but hate when someone tries to cheat me. we actually took some pen, pencil, rubbers and clothes for needed people. we wanted to make our vacation something meaningful and help poor people but at the same time we were careful with the people who tried to cheat us. i had to admit we were cheated 1 or 2 times (eg: taxi driver without meter) but it’s all an experience. since it was our first time, we didn’t know all the scams, now we know and that’s what i wanted to share with you.

tips on saving money:.if you are travelling through varadero, take viazul bus. you can check the schedule online and book the flight according to it. if your flight was delayed, then you will be left to rent a car or take a taxi..if you want to go to beach or look around havana, then take the tour bus for 5 cuc. most of the tour buses will come near a hotel and you can take that and connect to other routes as you wish. t1, t2 or t3.you will save some money if you cook for yourself. when we were there it was hard to find what we needed as two hurricanes wiped everything..learn some spanish or take a spanish translator (pda, phone and etc) with you. there is tons of spanish translation software available for your pda or phone..better to find chicas on the street and negotiate than going to clubs and finding chicas there..exchange money at the bank than at the airport. if you do exchange at the airport triple checks your money..if you don’t feel like cooking for yourself, then find local peso restaurant and eat there..please does your best research before you go!

i’m really sorry that i can’t share my casa info or guide info with you. i’m not being selfish but i want to protect those people. i don’t want anybody to miss-use them or send them to jail. i do respect them and more care about their privacy. i also promised not to share the info without their knowledge. if i’m selfish then i won’t be writing this review. i’m happy to answer any other questions you have and help you out with other info. but please do not ask for casa or guide info. i do have some word documents of clubs, chica pick up places and restaurants which i found through my own research. i’m happy to share that info with you.

final thought: please do not hike up the prices for chicas. there are lots of pussies available and you can always find the one for the price you want. i came to know monthly salary for a policeman or doctor (who make above average salary in cuba) is around 800 peso/30 cuc. so keep that in mind.

Nice report and sounds about right. Sounds like you guys did ok considering you didn't speak spanish and first timers in the island. Leaving the clubs for italians who fork out $100 cucs for pros was your best move. I told myself I would never go through that hassle with changing money at the airport again and kept some CUCs for next time just to get me out of the airport.
