The funny part is that I was looking at a RV and the manufacturer was like "Only set the temperature 20 degrees lower than it is outside or your pipes will freeze". I was like WTF? Oh no, I am going to figure out how to put in a system where I can get 65 degrees inside when it is 100 outside. So I needed not one but two AC units. RV manufacturers now let you put in up to 4 batteries in the typical well for batteries. The most powerful batteries that fit the slot are 12 volts 165 ah. That will run one AC all night. It can be charged via an alternator so just running the RV will charge the battery with a generator as a back up.
With the second AC, to run this on electricity, I would buy a power station, hook up solar panels to it, and give it two added batteries. The RVs I was looking at have a weight carrying capacity between 600 and 2000 pounds. Here is the funny part. The six batteries and the power station weigh about a 1,000 pounds. The cost for this setup is about $10,000 as well. Even with that, I still need to plug into shore power, which is electricity produced mostly with fossil fuels, and have a generator as back up.
Or I can buy a 5500 watt generator that weighs 200 pounds and burn $5 of fuel per night. In this case, alternative energy makes no sense.
I think it is hilarious that people use the term "off grid" in the RV world. First off, the electric RV is not really a thing because of the battery weight. Being "off grid" means you are using diesel or gasoline to drive to where you are going and the term "off grid" does not refer to using a fossil fuel generator although I see no reason why it matters. I can just see some hipster saying, "I use diesel for driving not power. For that I use the sun. " So what? You are burning a helluva more fuel carrying around a 1,000 pounds in batteries.
The only reason battery powered cars make sense then is because of how heavy the engines are. What makes much more sense is the use of solar power and batteries in a stationary environment.
It is not like there are not applications. China using solar to charge batteries and have cars come in and getting a battery change over 5 minutes versus charging up for an hour makes a helluva lot of sense. If you recall, that idiot Biden wanted to spend billions on charging stations.
