GTA,
Nice report. I am sure any first timer can learn from it. Thanks for your stories - although I can't agree with all of it (like taxis and meters - it's much cheaper to just negotiate the price before heading there).
Something I don't really understand. Sounds like you guys had a 24 hour guide around you?
Your advice to other non-speaking first timers about not going to clubs, but picking up in the street: That may be very difficult for some non-spanish speaking first timer who do not have a guide to do the talking.
But all in all. Great contribution.

Havana Report
Hi Travelling Gring,
Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure if you are mistaken my taxi experience as I was travelling to airport. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that. That taxi experience only happend once and this is when I travelled within Havana. If you are still talking about local taxi then I've taken lots of them before and exprienced this problem only once because of our careless. I wasn't aware that we can negotiate the price on metered taxi. If so it's good to know. I guess you can negotiate the price in advance if you are travelling to some known place (then you know exactly how far it is and how much it would cost). Most of the places we went, it was first time for our guide too. That's why we went with meter. We did travel on the shared taxi (old car which locals mostly use) once after we negotiated the price. We needed a taxi for 5 people for short distance so we thought the local taxi would be good option to save money. I had to admit I didn't like it for many reasons.
I agree it would be hard to pick up girls on the street for non-spanish speaking, first timers without guide. However, we were attracted by locals offering anything we want. They ment girls. Some locals who know some English always started converstation with us and later said they can arrange some girls for us. So "pimps" (I don't know if I can call them that) will find you and you don't have to go looking for them. Still you can't trust all of them as some of them will try to cheat you. But there are possibilities to pick up chicas on the street. My another 2 friends who went in May picked up chicas with the help of some locals (who knew few English). Those locals weren't pimps, they used the locals as translators to pick up chicas on the street. They didn't cheat my friends and in return my friends offered gifts or money. I found through my research most of the clubs are ruined by Europeans. They jacked up the prices for girls in the clubs. By avoiding clubs, you will save the enterance fee ($5-$35), expensive drinks, taxi money and police hustle.
I'm happy to get some feed back from different people. It's a great feeling to share what I know.
Season's Greetings to everyone.

I've never been in a taxi with the meter running in Havana. Of course, you gotta know the city to negotiate fare in advance, that's true, but if you know where you're going it's the best way. I go from Nacional to Parque Central for 2 cuc. Not happening with the meter on.

ALL cubanos are pimps! :-) Try and walk down the Malecón on a Saturday night and ask the first 500 dudes between 15 and 45 if they can hook you up with a girl... I never ever ever use any chulo or semi-chulo on the street. Makes me feel sick to my stomach just the thought of a girl beeing brought to me. But hey that's just me. The way things have developed in Cuba the last 4-5 years, I don't think people who don't speak Spanish have any alternative to pimps.

Hey, I'm European. What you meant to write was 'ruined by Italians'. It's a continent over here. That's like calling all canadians 'Americans'. But yes, you are right. Italians have made the clubs into expensive *****houses with worn-out bitches with bad attitudes. Unfortunately, for many people the clubs are the only place where they can meet and talk to girls in Havana - apart from using pimps of course.

Please
Hey Guys!
I know that Italians have ruined most wonderful places of mongering and not only. I know it and have experienced it all over the world.
But please let's say "most of the Italians" instead of "the Italians". I'm from Italy but never paid a girl more that 40 $! Never went in clubs to find girls and I don't pick up ugly chicks off course! I'm in my mid twentis and still very exigent in that field...
That was off course a semi-serious request. Just you know guys that Italians aren't all pigs and stupid persons...but actually in mongering and hunt girls most of them do!
It's the same if we think that all U.S guys are blond, fat and pro-Bush!
World is so beautiful because persons are so different, don't you think so?

[QUOTE=Gta Guy]Hello guys,
Final thought: Please do not hike up the prices for chicas. There are lots of pussies available and you can always find the one for the price you want. I came to know monthly salary for a policeman or doctor (who make above average salary in Cuba) is around 800 Peso/30 CUC. So keep that in mind.

Great report, very well written. Cuba is one of those places though that if you do learn to speak the language (even a little bit) it becomes 100 times better - in my humble opinion, GFE is not possible without this as you end up with a lot of blinking at each other (when you're not having sex) and speaking in an almost retarded fashion with lots of hand gestures with each other as you're trying to communicate ;)
Also thanks for the update on the scams (especially the one at the airport), I have always been given a receipt when I change money at the airport, although I suspect, as you pointed out, everyone has different experiences.
Regards,

Not looking to be difficult BUT, paying a girl for sex you're good with (i.e no moral outrage), but if someone (pimp, not quite a pimp, or pimp in training) BRINGS a girl for the purposes of you paying for sex it makes you "sick to your stomach" - a little strong on the language there no?
-
If the chico brings the girl, he will be getting paid too.
My experience is that you always get the taxista to use the meter as they always are on the lookout to overcharge. You get no price breaks from the illegal taxis but get to ride in a dilapitated car for the same price as a legal taxi. If using an unofficial taxi, always know the price before getting in.

Not at all strong, but exactly how I feel. If I had written a longer piece, you would have understood. Thing is, I hardly ever pay. Not becayse I'm Brad Pitt, but because I have been so many times and speak Spanish. I usually go for a month or two at a time, and I pay somewhere between 0 and 2 times per trip. And then it's not some puta I see in the street and ask to come up and fuck for 40 cuc.
Have no problem at all with people using chulos. With all the rules and hazzle in Havana, I think it's about the only way to go if you're a Cuba-newbie with limited time and limited Spanish on your hands. But me, I would feel like shit being brought some strange chica in my casa. But that's just me and my strong language.
If this is a situation that makes you feel great, cool with me.

Okay, guys, I'm a bit let down that noone has come through with help... Seeing how seldom I ask for help myself in here...
Anyway, seems like I'll be in a not too chica friendly this time around, so plan B must be a decent illegal casa nearby.
Any solid tips on illegal CP's in Vedado, Miramar, Centro or Vieja?

Cheeno is the owners name, it's pretty much on the corner of the Prado and the Malecon. He'll let you bring as many/different back as you want. He has a couple of rooms upstairs, kinda small. But worked well for my stays.

Is this an illegal or legal casa?

Thanks.

Thanks, sounds like a good place to keep as a backup. Though not sure you should be posting the exact address too much in public forums - that is if you dont want to return one day to find the casa sign gone and the owner behind bars...
But thanks a lot...
