i do not think termas are in the direct line of fire in the efforts to "clean up" rio. they are not so much out in the open, and gdp's are not seen congregating in the street. as much as i enjoy helpee between terma runs, it really does attract riff-raff outside looking to take advantage of drunk tourists. if/when helpee ever closes, the gdp's will simply ply their wares at a few of the nearby cafes until a replacement reappears.

If one could guess, how many millions do you estimate mongers pump into Brasil's economy each year? Maybe we could make it easier and just say Rio. We wont include the thousands that mongers send every month to their wives/novias and girlfriends. Lets just try to add up all the money spent on GDPS, hotels, taxis, food, etc.....

Cariocas obtain no benefit from Help?! I dont think you are looking at the BIG picture. There are literally THOUSANDS of cariocas who benefit (monetarily wise) directly from the GDPs working at Help!

From the internet cafe owners in Copa, to the taxi drivers, to the people who sell gum, cigarretes, food and photos in front every night. To the hundreds of apartment owners who rent their places to both GDPs and mongers. To the beauty salon owners who do hair and nails everyday. To all the employees in the clothing, cell phone, electronics, purses and sunglasses stores! Lets not even mention the thousands of family members, baby sitters and drug dealers who receive money directly from the GDPS. I could literally go on and on writing about all the cariocas who owe a portion of their revenue to the money that mongers pump into Rio.

I was asking a friend of mine who has lived in Copa for quite some time what her and her neighbors think of Help Disco. It's a bit choppy, but this is a translation of what she said:

If there are girls it is because they have customers. If there were not people willing to pay there would not be any. It doesn’t make a difference to me because it does not change anything in my life. There will be a place for prostitution even if it is a common place like Baronet in Ipanema.

I like to respect the space of the others. It does not make me uncomfortable in the least bit that there are hookers on the beach, because I stopped feeling ashamed of their attitudes. Just like gays. They don’t respect themselves. They look hard in the face of any man, even if they are married. The same with Club Help; nobody pays it any attention.

The case of Help doesn’t matter. It is a political thing. Nobody talks about it because it is not important. Brizola (former governor of RJ) tried to close it before. But they are the guilty ones. Today the hookers are less scandalous but I still do not respect them and I feel bad when I see a woman abusing her body all day. I have clients who are hookers and they do not realize there is a time and place for everything. They are dressed like hookers 24 hours doing dirt and not respecting people with their low-level of Portuguese. If you work at the beach or in Help at night, walking around all day dressed like a hooker. The truth is that whatever they try to do around the beach, Copa will always have hookers. They are not going anywhere.

And the crime is not going to stop. It has nothing to do with the disco. It is because the money flows like water. I’m talking about the gringos, because they are the biggest victims of this type of violence. The violence will continue as it has been. I have never been robbed. Foreigners are robbed. But the reality of the moment is sending many people in the same space. Where they sent one before, they now send four. And once again gringos will still be fucking because they will be able to get a broad from anywhere. I have clients who are prostitutes and sometimes they tell me things. I feel sorry for anyone who picks up prostitutes but it is the end of times and it has to be like that, so be it.

Who benefits of Help?

The Help-owners, GPs, beggers, shoeshine-boys, vendors, taxidrivers, muggers and some corrupt police. For those people it's very convenient to have such a large number of gringos concentrated in one place. Most of them willing to overpay in one way or other.

For the locals living in Copa, Help is a big disgrace. Molesting street-kids sniffing glue, shitting and sleeping on the side/back streets. Muggers doing their thing and making the area unsafe. Regular girls are ashamed of passing by in front of Help as they risk that some overaged fat gringos in baseballcaps will flirt with them while waiving some green dollar-bills. Mongers might think Help is a paradise, but for the locals it's a very ugly scene.

Very few people will suffer if they close Help. The tourism (both the domestic and foreign) will continue just fine. Copa will always have plenty of GPs. If there are monger-tourists who stop visiting Brazil just because Help is closed, they propably are very few (maybe not that few among the posters in this thread). Visiting Rio (monger or not) isn't synonymous with visiting Help.

Rio getting the Olympic Games is good news for any monger in Rio at that time. Imagine the hords of GPs from all over Brazil that will head to Rio. :)

Beijing gaining the Olympics in 2008 did nothing short of FUCK the whole P4P scene in Beijing - all thanks to the Chinese Govt who were not going to let the rest of the world see it's seedy underside - and it still suffers from it today.

Until March 2008 Billy could not get to Beijing quick enough - the main w.h.o.r.e bars in Maggies and Hollywood were IMHO just behind Help in terms a mongering experience - literally hundreds of Russian, Mongolian, Uzbek, Kazah, Chinese w.h.o.r.e.s all plying their trade - today they are ghost houses.

Now Billy avoids Beijing like the plague - as do many of my 'associates' who enjoyed this Asian paradise previously.

I'm going to Rio for the first time in about 2.5 years. This may be a longshot but since I see people still talking about ingrid from luomo, figured it might be worth a shot to ask about three other hotties from luomo.

Sheyla.- tall blond, pretty face, nutty in the cabina. Hates to drink alcohol, hangs with ingrid, bi, likes it in the ass, etc. One of the best dancers there as well.

I leave with a girl about 1 once per month I am there. Usually go there and party, go home alone, or go straight to vips after with a few garotas. It is a good atmosphere to party in, but a rip off to pull garota from.

Billy, you are right, they tightened up even in Germany during the football world cup, even with liberal attitude of Germans on sex. Now South Africa is starting up a huge clean up operation, I think they are even introducing new laws !!? Now imagine the long term effect of that. They try to tackle it temporarily, but the effects are very permanent...

Of course the hurd of girls will come for that few weeks but then due to new laws and clampdowns it will be far worse afterwards....

The fact of the matter is Brazil is coming into its' own as a country. And closing Help and cleaning up the area is an important step in this process. It is a highly visible statement as it front and center on the oceanfront.

GDP's and p4p will always be available - it will just be less visible. Agree with Sperto, any lost $ from any mongers that stop coming to Brazil because of Help's closing will be insignificant and easily replaced with other tourist $.

A lot of venues near water. Watching the vid reminded me of how much water pollution there is in Rio. If they win the Bid, they'll have a lot of cleaning up to do. Especially Lagoa.

OK. But I also wish to announce that many gringos hate Copacabana because we cannot sit down and have a decent meal without GDPS harrasing us!
This is the undiscussed aspect of all of this. Wherever we go in Copa we get harrased by GDPS. I was in the grocery store and had two separate GDPS ask if I wanted a massage; it was very embarrassing.

The Brazilian man in front of me actually got into another line.
Of course, I will bet the story when he got home was: Those gringos come here and solicit girls everywhere.

Yes, some gringos act irresponsibly but I agree more with what MR. E's friend below said. She sounds honest. The GDPS are the one's coming on to us 24/7, 365!

I was in Copacabana in the early 1990s and there was even more postitution (of a worse sort that I will NOT mention here). There were few gringos and virtually NO Americans, of course.

Gringos are not the problem at all. This is mostly the usual case of people blaming outsiders for their problems.
This talk about "cleaning" up Copa is interesting because they can only have this convesation now. In the past prostitution was much worse in Copacabana. They had to clean it up for it to look the way it does NOW.

In fact, since we seem to be linking everything that happens in Copa to gringos why not claim that the gringo presence raised the average age of prostitutes! Those who have been around Rio for a long time get this point!

I know both scenes very very well.

Beijing never ever came close to the mongering scene in Rio.

Yes, there had been and are Uzbeks, Mongolians, Russians and also Chinese girls, but never to these numbers as in Rio. Maggies is by far not the size of Help and there is no TA in front of Maggies with all the girls standing around on the street.

Can you also imagine the Brazilian "efficiency" matches the Chinese one??? I can not.

Anyhow, I must agree that the Chinese P4P scene was utterly destroyed by the Olympics and has not been since as it was before. I have to travel to Beijing again in a few weeks time but I do not have great expectations.
