While I don't want to belittle what happened here, me thinks we need to keep things in their proper perspective : when I hear "threat of terrorist attack" I envision something on or near the scale of 9/11, not just a hand grenade being tossed into a bar in a low-rent bedroom community of a big city.

Unfortunately, we have had a few grenades lobbed into crowds at bus stops in Nairobi as well as bars in Mombasa before, and I imagine the perpetrators like such "soft targets" because there are so many of them, which makes it pretty much impossible for the overt and covert state organs to deny the bad guys access to these locations.

Just remember : terrorists try to f*k with your mind by suggesting that a hand grenade in Mshoroni today could be replicated in Nyali tomorrow. Maybe they have the means to make it happen once in a blue moon, but how many blue moons are there in the average person's life?

While I can only talk for myself, I refuse to be scared by that small a probability and will just continue with my regular daily grind like nothing happened and like nothing is going to happen either.

If you read carefully I said "from a more respectable source" instead of "from a more credible source". I don't doubt that the US administration has very detailed and possibly accurate information at hand. However, what they choose to say in public or what they choose to share with their partners hasn't always been undistorted. Wiki Leaks and others have taught us this long ago.

In civilian trauma we have an expression that "trauma is no accident" and to think you have no control over the time and place of your passing is a little simplistic. At home in the USA, um, I mean Canada, I like to drive humongous SUVs when I'm not tooling in my CTS-V. I don't take my pale ass into SE DC, the blue blood streets in Baltimore or off Bourbon St in NO. I drink infrequently, I stay inside most evenings, I don't go clubbing and if the US State Dept has issued a travel warning for US citizens I incorporate that warning into my sense of geopolitics and adjust my living habits accordingly. I did not read into that threat warning released by the US State Dept any prohibition for travel and if I were in a room on some beach in Mombasa I certainly would not run for the exit. It was a warning and it just happened to be very timely.

If I'm in Africa on sex-cation (only been to Ghana a few times) I might travel some with a solo gf but otherwise have been fully satisfied laying low and letting the girls come to me. In other venues where I'm more comfortable, such as the PI, I enjoy hitting clubs and so on, though the best source of entertainment for me has always been back at the hotel. Mombasa is high on my "places to go" list, but I'm psyched that staying at my hotel I will have plenty of tail and won't need to attend any church or go see an English football match at Jericho's to get my game on or get fragged for that matter.

Risk management is just SOP for people who can live with it and want to maximize their chances to live and phuck a few extra years.

My situation is a bit complicated, so she can't be my live-in gf; the best I could do is to put her up in a nearby rental property.

One thing I certainly know won't be going away anytime soon are the wand security checks in Kenya.

This would be in November. Also, any security issues on Diani Beach at night? I hear there may be some security issues. Feel free to send me a private message. This is by far the best swimming and sunbathing beach accessible to the general public in Kenya right now (with North of Lamu being off limits these days; it was always too eclectic and pricey to be visited by hoi polloi anyhow).

I wouldn't walk the beach after dark though, but that applies pretty much everywhere on the North Coast as well (except around Il Covo)

You'll have way more choice on Nyali Beach and Shanzu Beach, but those beaches are quite narrow and crowded and poorly kept. The ambience on Diani Beach is just so much better that, at least to me, it makes more than up for what it lacks in quantity.

There are people who do not feel comfortable staying in crowded hotels, and who would prefer to get accomodation in a more private setting. If anyone here would be interested in renting a furnished house in Mombasa for their holiday, please inbox me.
