Try Hotel Lobelia a few minutes toward the airport from Edna Mall. Its cheap and pretty good hotel, although nothing there is brand new.

I haven't tried with GF, but if you're paying for a double room I can't imagine an issue, like most of Africa. Call 'them and ask beforehand. Look at their schedule and you quickly notice itineraries such as Luanda to Tana, for example where the connection time is 11 hours and 55 minutes. But if you 'get lucky' and catch a 20-some hour layover, this is worst option for a 'beginner': such a limited time window would only encourage taking short cuts which would to potential of risks. I've been only once to Ethiopia (Addis and Dire Dawa), but many times in the Bole Star Alliance Gold lounge for hours and hours where the improvement of food and machine has been notable.
