I don't know the fees you're charged and the forex rate to be considered using the Sharks ATM or any other in Germany. I suggest to draw 500 Euro to cover entrance fee, taxi from / to Darmstadt HBF, train ticket Frankfurt-Darmstadt. Remaining EUR 400 for four sessions one hour each (without gaurantee for DTK …..).

The difference may be less for cards from outside the EU. If you can, locate a German bank near where you are (Commerzbank, Stadtsparkasse etc.) and use their ATM.

Then lately the lobby ATM at Sharks limited one to 150 bucks per extraction. Thus to get more cold hard cash you have to perform a further transaction. I would also curse the ATM because of this. Really annoying.
As far as my experience is there is no fees charged by the ATM. If you have a non euro card and you choose to take cash using the ATM's foreign exchange rate if you are not in the euro then the rate is not quite wholesale bank rates. If you are in the euro then there is no spread on foreign exchange conversion rates.
If you do not want to use the ATM in the Sharks lobby then you can wander across to the Rewe store around the corner to use the ATM there.
Yeah, a lot of guys deliberately stuff up knowing how to use the ATM to avoid paying the girls saying they cannot access their in surplus bank balance.
The ATM inside the HBF is nice. I like too eat lunch around the train station before heading to Sharks (it is good to eat at least one decent meal outside as we are cooped up inside the club for the rest of the day and forced to eat that trash served by them), and on the way to Sharks I like to pick up 500 E or more every day. If I don't spend that much daily, I keep accumulating some extra cash. Over 4,5 days that builds up to a tidy sum. I also pick up a decent amount right after getting off the plane in the airport.
A few years ago, I used to use the Sharks ATM. But as Bitumen said, it has become less reliable and useless. Now, I just make sure to plan ahead.
One American dude I was talking to said that a couple of years ago, he ran out of cash and the ATM did not work and he almost got beat up by the club cops. I guess he learned his lesson now.
Still, DE remains such a cash dependent society. Strange, seeing how the rest of developed world is moving to electronic cash so quickly. Not just the west, it is even more advanced in China. DE remains some what of an anachronism.
