Zalo is used by the majority of Vietnamese people.

However, big difference is that WeChat can translate the conversation for you!

You write your message in English, they can read it in Vietnamese or whatever language they use. I. E. Chinese.

They can respond to you in Vietnamese, and you touch conversation and ask WeChat to translate to English. That beats cutting and pasting to translate in another program.

I basically find Zalo much more difficult to communicate with others.

Yes, I've met people on Zalo, but, with much more effort.

From my personal experience, there are at least 5 X more players to hook up with on WeChat.

I find Zalo to be more chat and friend type hook ups.

My observations are from about 9 months experience in Vietnam and about 3 years in China.

If you are unable have good hunting on WeChat, something is wrong.

I stand corrected on Zalo as I have never had experience with Zalo and connecting with a working girl. Wechat on the other hand is bait and switch. Girls do not match photos, and person you contacting most of the time is the pimp.

Zalo pro: it's a Vietnamese app therefore more likely to find services for locals unlike wechat which is for foreigners.

Zalo con: everyone has it. Unlike Wechat, the search function has a lot more people on it so the search takes a lot longer.

Ok guys, if you read through this Hanoi section you will get the gist that Hanoi is no monger paradise. That is an understatement!! Geez it was tough to get action here, possible, but not really worth the hassle compared to Saigon. If you are heading to Vietnam for the purpose of bonking sweet, young Viets, then stick with the South would be my rule from now on.

Here's my take on what was available.

Wandering through the old quarter during the day looking for a massage shop is a waste of time. I enquired at a few and even if they had a cutie at the front, they were just promotion girls and don't do massage. I actually didn't try any of these as the vibe indicated nothing would be available. Happy to be corrected if that's not the case. At night time I did get the moto taxi offering girls etc, so I decided to follow one lady as long as it was walking distance and I was in control of the situation. She said there is only one place in walking distance and it would "all inclusive for 1 M", so off we walk for 5 minutes to what would be like a "hot toc" in Saigon. About 6 decent girls to choose from and 3 skinny, heavily tattooed pimps minding them.

I paid the $1 M and up the stairs we go for our romp. The room upstairs was exactly like I had seen in some places in Saigon, with a massage table separated by a curtain, and around 5 tables in the room altogether. The girl was 22 and started off very friendly with some cuddling and gentle massage. After 15 minutes I started to remove her clothes and that's where things took a turn for the worse. She was asking for another $1 M for a BJ. I decided to cut my loss and get dressed as mr happy wasn't so happy anymore and I didn't know what sort of situation was develop with the skinny dudes. Hopefully your ticket home goes via one of those other countries. Or at least you have time to pop down to Saigon.

I tend to stay in the smaller "boutique" hotels (20-30 rooms per hotel), there are many in the old quarter. They are cheaper, comfortable, usually good wifi, include breakfast and very friendly. Many will pick you up and drop you off at the airport for about $15 USD which takes the pressure off using some scammer offering you a ride. Also, I find the staff is more than willing to go with you to a nearby shop to get a local sim card or whatever you need. Its easy to get to know the staff, manager and even the owners and they are cool with it as long as the girl has her IC (or ID) with her. No problem, no questions, not even any looks hehehe. I have been going to these cities for 10 years now, not an issue as far as I am concerned. Be polite, smile, chat a bit and you will be able to do what you want to in terms of guests (and hopefully you will be able to do what you want to the overnight guest hehe). And don't be a Cheap Charlie, leave the staff a nice tip (there usually is a tip jar) and feel free to tip the maids too, 100,000 VND each for the maids and 500,000 for the hotel tip jar. that is less than $50 USD total.

The only non-local that stayed with me was a friend from singapore who wanted to visit hanoi with someone she knew..that was me. No problem at all. But I did notice a behavior in that there are lots of messages sent to you when you don't have a paid account. Then after you sign up, the messages sort of dry up.

Can't say for sure if that's what they are doing but it would be make good business sense (albeit unethical) to send these random messages to encourage guys to switch to a paid account to unlock the message.
