3G Purchase and Setup in Thailand
Hi Everyone,
I'm a new poster to this forum; I normally hang out in the Tijuana forums, living as I do in southern California. First off, thanks for all of the awesome information! I am on my way to Thailand (I'm a newbie to Thailand) in two weeks time and I think that ISG has answered most of my questions regarding Thailand, save one. My question, ironically, isn't about the travel or monger scene but more about technology issues to expect while visiting Thailand.
Specifically, what do other mongers recommend for cellular / 3G / data plans while visiting Thailand? The reason I ask is not so much because I want to spend time surfing the net while there, but rather in order to use my VoIP app on my iPhone. I purchased a number through Iconnecthere. Com, which means that people from North America can call me at the number, and I will receive the call in Thailand, and I can use my phone to call North America for a very low rate. However, this will not work unless I can somehow link my iPhone to a local cellular / data provider.
Does anybody have any recommendations for how to go about doing this? I understand there are places where this can be done at the BKK airport, but my flight arrives at midnight, and they may not be open. Where else in BKK can I do this, and what brands / carriers do other mongers recommend? I am not very technically inclined, so I would like a full service place (no pun intended) where they can help me with the plan and also adjusting my phone settings. I've never used Iconnecthere. Com before, so if anybody knows any tips etc that would also be appreciated.
Before regular members heap scorn on me let me just say, in my own defense, that I did RTFF and found some very helpful information but I'm a techno-phobe and it's really important that I get my phone serivce up and running right away, with minimal issues. I also don't want to waste the whole trip with technical issues! Thanks in advance, and I may be back with a few more questions. I promise, in return, to leave a series of good trip reports.
I will be arriving in BKK on November 18th (late in the evening) so if anybody will be around Nana Plaza that week and wants to get together for a beer or two, the first round is on me! I'll be staying at the Nana hotel in BKK and then hope to head south to Pattaya later in the week. Happy mongering and safe travels to everyone!

I use AIS and it has 3G coverage in some areas. I imagine DTAC is the same. You can get a prepaid top up SIM card and purchase a package that includes so many Gig of data per month, or so many hours, or unlimited data service. Just one month if you like.
I have two phone numbers in other countries that are mobile because they are Skype connections. When I do not answer Skype after so many rings, sometimes due to data / internet connection dropping out, then Skype automatically redirects to my mobile phone number in Thailand. So in the end I am covered no matter what, and I have a separate Thai phone number for mongering Prepaid SIM card which can be shut off when I don't want any awkward calls coming in.
So just about always contactable when I want to be. With this set up I don't use a normal home phone number at all. I have too many different residences and I may not always be located where everyone thinks I am.
My setup makes it seem like I am at home in Thailand and 2 other countries simultaneously, and it doesn't cost a packet either.
