There's no doubt that Colombia's racist but, as a white gringo, I can assure the "don't know shit about shit" attitude it totally BAU. The locals *really* have no idea about where anything is in their barrio, even if it's next door. Its as frustrating as all hell. And the second most important thing to learn after the meaning of "no hay".

Sometimes things can get frustrating in Colombia. Taxis, doormen goons as you say, store workers, etc.
I've gone thru this many times when looking for places, in many cities in Colombia.
Most of the time it's mis-understanding, mis-communication or just ignorance.
Best advice: always keep your cool. make as many amigos as possible and no enemies.
You'll eventually find what you're looking for :)

That's exactly what it was, among other things. Misunderstandings, miscommunications and ignorance. I eventually found what I was looking for, kept my cool, and to my knowledge didn't make any enemies. It's the other side that didn't cooperate. All latin countries have a bit of racism. You have to chalk it up to the ignorance of some of the people that has been watching america's racist attitudes to black people. Some of the latinos actually believe that you should treat black americans badly because they believe that blacks are treated badly in the U.S.. I have travelled to a lot of cities in Colombia and have not actually experienced any overt racism but I know it's there because I have talked to the black colombians and they can tell you a lot about the racism that they have experienced in their own country. My advice to you is don't get to caught up into it because you you won't change the mindset of ignorant assholes. Que chevre.

My take is that what you perceive as Racism, is racism, but more of a class bias.
When I am in Cartagena, what race of people are the touts in most cases? Whom are the most aggressive people? You now the answer. Why? because they happen to be the poor. Maybe that makes me a bigot, becuase I cannot stand being swarmed by them. Maybe if someone like Bill Clinton were in cartagena, he could talk to the poor blacks and " feel their pain", you know bite his lower lip etc...
I cannot stand their aggressive behavior, shoving shit in your face after you have told them many times " no", but it is what it is.....

And I'm not sure how many days I should stay in each city. I also have 1-2 friends in Medellin and was considering going there briefly. I have researched Cali a lot, read through the forums, but would appreciate your feedback and anything else you can tell me. I have a basic e-mail membership package with them so far. With ACG, Ricardo is encouraging me to purchase a membership promising me to give e-mails and phone numbers, however, I cannot speak good enough Spanish to communicate with the girls yet via phone. E-mail is feasible because I get the assistance of translations. I don't know too much about ACG or Ricardo. Or the overall experience. I think they are pretty honest people and not trying to steal my money totally. I have read that you can bargain with them when you get there and that it's better to stay outside the agency's place to save money.
I think in my case, since my Spanish is not good, I will definitely need to stay with the agencies or get one of the local tour guides you all have discussed. That information is appreciated too if you have it handy for those three cities: Bogota, Medellin, and Cali.
There seems to be some disagreement between Medellin and Cali, which one is better. So I'm trying to find out what I should do. So far the plan is to book a flight to Cali. It stops in Bogota. And I'll change my flight there (it should be cheaper and easy right? ). Then see how it goes, if I hit it off with someone or like it, extend my stay, etc. And somewhere within a 2 week period, take a weekend to Medellin and if I like it stay also. I have nothing to back this up but a gut feeling, and I rely on it often when dealing with folks I don't know. 2) As for what is the best place? I think that all depends on you. It looks like you are looking for a wife. What qualitites are important to you? I. E. Do you like white, dark, or triguena gals? Are you looking for someone that is career oriented or do you prefer a stay at home type of wife. There are a zillion other things to consider. I know it is hard to say I want this, this, and this. And ultimately you will probably fall in love with someone who wasn't exactly what you were looking for. But if you do know some of these things at least we will be able to lead you in the right direction.
Diesregarding what you are looking for in a chica, here is a very basic idea of the cities.
Medellin. Most gringo oriented city in Colombia (I. E. If you were going to spend signifcant time in Colombia. Medellin would be the place that most gringos feel most comfortable with day to day every day life). Medellin is where you will find the lightest skinned gals. Medellin will have the most plasticas. The espanol they use in Medellin is far and away the most difficult espanol for me to understand out of any Spanish I have ever heard. Other than Barcelona, Spain. But since you are a beginner anyways that probably isn't too much of a concern. Medellin and Bogota will have the most career oreinted women. Most typically would say that Medellin has the best facial features and the best cuerpos (tits and ass). Though the ass I would disagree with.
Bogota. Bogota always throws me for a loop. Obviosly it is very metropolitan with a lot to do. But in Bogota I always feel lost. I personally admire the physical features of the Cachacas/Rolas. But most would say that they have the worst of the both the facial features and cuerpo features (tits and ass). The gals will for the most part be Triguena. But not the triguena beauty that I see in Cali and Barranquilla. Triguena nonetheless. If you are looking for a career oriented women. This would probably be the place to go. Most say that the people in Bogota are the coldest of all the people in Colombia. I find it to be true for the most part, though you will find a lot of friendliness. Don't get me wrong, anything is better than the US. As for crime. Obviously Bogota will have the most crime, but not necessarily the most crime per capita. Nothing has ever happened to me in Bogota.
Cali. To me the calenas are the most beautiful of all (I don't like Silicone tits). Calenas have the best asses (along with las costenas), but they won't have the tetas you will find in Medellin. They also don't have the spectacular faces that most prefer in the Paisas (Medellin). I actually prefer the faces and skin color of Calenas and Barranquilleras the most. Of any gals in the world. Most would disagree. The gals will be very approachable. You won't have as many career oriented women. Most likely you would find a house-wife in Cali, if that is what you are looking for. Latly, there isn't a whole heck of much to do in Cali. Seriously, I can see how many would be very very bored in Cali, especially in the daytime and on weekdays in the evening. IMPORTANT Cali is by far and away the most dangerous. It's your biggest chance to get mugged, shot, killed, robbed and it's also your biggest chance to get kidnapped out of all the place you would probably consider going. I wouldn't consider Cali if you don't speak Spanish very well. And even then, it takes cajones and probably the understanding that if you were to die, was anyone really depending on you? I. E. If people depend on you in the US, I would not go to Cali. That's just my opinion.
Cartagena. I love Cartagena strictly because there is a beach (though it sucks) and I love the architecture of the buildings, the vibe in the discos, and one can really appreciate the safety there. It is by far, the safest place to go. That being said, if you are looking for a wife, if you do not prefer dark (black) girls Cartagena is not the place for you. Does that mean there are only black girls? No. But the majority of the citizens of Cartagena are black, and those that aren't. I. E. The ones you would probably wnat to fall in love with due to their looks and features are probably Putas from other cities in Colombia. I do have some triguena friends from Cartagena. But for the most part per capita if triguena is what you want. I'd go elsewhere.
Last point.
I personally don't use the marriage agencies as I want to find someone that I really "Connect" with as opposed to a gal from a marriage agency who probably will "Connect" with whoever and act however you want. Afterall she knows you are looking for a wife. If that is your intention, then I think it comes down to what you are looking for in regards to physical features and career orientation. All the Colombianas are extremely sweet and Colombianas live to please their man. Of course if she doesn't really love you then, who knows. Thus the reason I would never use a marriage agency. I think a marriage agency can be hit or miss. But to be honest, so can meeting them on your own. Good luck.

Hey guys, I'm a long time member but first-timer on the Cali board. I'll be there for 4 nights in January. I've read back awhile in the forum, but I'm not seeing much on hotels. Can anyone please recommend one that is in a good and safe (I'll be alone) area and chica-friendly? Are most of the hotels chica-friendly? Someone recommended me the Obelisque (sp?) but I can't find any info on it.
That and anything else you would advise a newbie to Cali would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
