Castilian is considered the purest Spanish (if that matters to you). In Castilian "B" and "V" are interchangeable and normally pronounced as an indistinct consonant halfway between the two.

Double "ll" in Castilian is always pronounced like "y" in English, but throughout the DR (and elsewhere in Latin America?) it is pronounced like English hard "j" are the start of words and often in the middle of words. This may be theoretically incorrect but is so widespread, even among educated speakers, that you would be pissing into the wind trying to speak otherwise.

The good news is that, whichever of the above options you use, you will be understood.

Remember there are ten/twenty times as many people speaking Latin American Spanish as there are speaking Castilian. The benefit of observing Castilian is not because it is "traditional" or "classy" or "more educated" but because it lays down a standard. The same applies in languages as in engineering or design "Standard is better than 'better'".

V and B are pronounced exactly the same, but HOW they are pronounced depends on the position in the word and the letters that follow. If it is the first letter in the word or followed by a vowel, there is a lip smack and a hard sound: boca, albahaca, verde. In other positions the lips do not touch and it has a softer sound: obra, etc. There are also some spelling rules that can help you decide whether to use v or b but I can't remember them right now. My Spanish isn't perfect but my spelling in Spanish is very close to perfect, but I just have it memorized and don't use the rules.

Y and ll vary greatly in their pronunciation from place to place. Here in Buenos Aires (unless y is the last letter in the word), it comes out "zh": Zho me zhamo Ricardo. In Colombia (although this varies from place to place in Colombia; my example is specific to Bógota) it has a strong "fricative" sound and comes out like j: Jo me jamo Ricardo. Other places it has a nasal sound.

So I've never seen any mention of this on any of the boards and figured I might as well post here as this place is such a wealth of information.

I wear contact lenses and take them out when I sleep. I do also have glasses that I can wear when my contacts are out. Without either, I'm practically blind. I feel like I could end up in a rather vulnerable position with a puta. Now, while I know in a nicer place like BB's or one of the better hotels where they take a girl's cedula, I'm sure it's not an issue, but have any of you guys ever had any problems with this? I also wear contacts and glasses. I had a funny experience regarding my "blindness" when I do not wear anything while I was in Hotel Napolitano on May 2009, you can read my posts about that travel in the forum.

Contact lenses should never be in contact with even bottled or tap water, so I infer you should avoid having your eyes wettened by water minutes before using it. I have never read of harm to eyes because of taking a shower, but I have only mongered in the DR and Curacao.
