Only the pizza was as good as it was 20 years ago. As it didn't look like many more women would arrive, we left at 11 pm when the place had 10 girls and 4 times as many men. Age of the girls ranging from 28 to 50, none for whom I'd be willing to spend what they have been reported to ask for (3 million?).

I set off on a new adventure. My last trip to Asia was pre-COVID. While I know much has changed in those years, I still needed something different than the usual Thailand / Vietnam / Philippines trips I previously experienced. I figured I'd go to Indonesia for the first time, and if I didn't like it then I'd take a quick flight elsewhere via AirAsia. Luckily for me, that was NOT the case; I fell in love with Jakarta!

Departure flight: I booked a one way ticket to Jakarta using AA miles, 37.5 k miles plus $80 (taxes) via Cathay Pacific. Hong Kong 12 hour overnight layover. I originally planned on spending my layover exploring the nightlife. However, as it was my first trip to Indonesia and I had a carryon bag full of cash, I didn't want to risk anything before I even reached my actual vacation! From the looks of it, many people thought the same thing because there were many people sprawled out sleeping on the airport floor waiting for their flights.

Evisa: [URL]https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/.[/URL] $30/30 days). FIRST ERROR: When completing your internet visa application Triple check the information you enter. I didn't notice at the time, but when you enter dates and don't put the slashes between the month / day / year, rather than giving you an error message, the date reverts to the current date. So, according to the visa, I was 3 days old vs 40+ years old. When I arrived in Jakarta, I could not enter via the eVisa lane because my visa was flagged. When I went to Passport control, the officer pointed out the error in my application, and that the only solution was to get a new Visa on Arrival using correct information and paying the VOA fee. I and about 6 other people made the same error and had to do the Walk of Shame from Passport Control to the VOA area to buy new visas and then return to Passport Control.

Airport Ride service (Gojek): [URL]https://www.gojek.com/blog/gojek/gocar-from-airport.[/URL] After retrieving my luggage, I walked toward the door. I saw a beautiful Indo girl working for Gojek. She was giving away free water and also assisting people to schedule rides, giving directions to Gojek car staging areas, etc. Got her Instagram after she finished helping me set everything up. (I will definitely never forget her!) I used the free airport Wi-Fi to set everything up. The nice thing here is, that if you want to do money exchange or SIM card setup before getting your car, that is ok. You schedule your ride (there is no time schedule, just that you want a Gojek ride), complete your errands, then walk to the appropriate area (VIP or Regular. VIP is directly outside of the airport door, Regular is a two minute walk from the VIP section). A Gojek representative will ask you for your code (sent to you after requesting a ride via the app), log your ride, and signal a driver to pick you up. I did this instead figuring I'd get my SIM and exchange money in the city where the rates would be better. Why pay the convenience fees at the airport, right? One note: Although I used my credit card for Gojek fares, the airport to hotel fare does not include the toll road fee 8000 IDR (50 cents). I gave the driver $1 USD and he put it in an envelope he had full of USD. I guess I'm not the first person to pay in USD. Fare airport to hotel in Central Jakarta 14,000 IDR ($8. 50 USD) 25 minutes door to door in no traffic.

SIM Card. Past baggage claim, the SIM card stands usually charged 220,000 IDR ($14 USD) for 15 GB /30 days. Knowing it would be cheaper outside of the airport, I passed on this option. Later I went to Lokasari Mall Second floor where there were several different cell phone stalls. The rate I was being quoted was 100,000 IDR for 3 GB or 200,000 for 25 GB on Telkomsel. My cell phone was unlocked and installation was easy. It worked perfectly for 2 days. However, I had not registered my IMEI at Customs Office in the airport. Yes, I knew that I should have done so. For all the countries I have visited, I never registered my IMEI and wasn't planning on doing so. After a couple of days, suddenly my SIM card stopped working. I went to an official Telkomsel store in Cental Park Mall. The employee checked my card with her phone and it worked properly. She put her SIM card in my cell phone and it didn't work. I then confessed to the employee that I did not register my IMEI at the airport. The representative said that if I buy a SIM card here at the Telkomsel store, she can register my IMEI. SIM card with 3 GB is 50,000 IDR ($3). I wanted more data and got 6 GB additional for 35,000 IDR ($2. 25). I held onto the other SIM card in case I ran out of data (I was never close to using up the total data purchase during my 3-week trip). I gave the unused SIM card to a hotel employee who also took care of my room during the trip. Later he told me he sold it to a foreign guest who had just arrived to the hotel. Good for him, happy it worked out well!

Hotel: I stayed at Redstar Hotel after reading trip reports online. I booked through Agoda 220,000 IDR / night ($13.50). It was cheaper than the rate booked through the hotel. When I extended my trip, the hotel clerk suggested that I book on Agoda where the price is cheaper 300,000 IDR ($18.50). Room was clean but dated. Breakfast was edible but nothing great. Housecleaning daily with fresh towels and (2) two free bottles of water daily. The rooftop bar was awesome to watch sunset. A lot of the Chinese patrons brought their own bottle of liquor up to the roof and just got ice from the bar.

Transportation. Grab and Gojek are easy to use, just depends on your preference. Most of my rides were $1 USD and I had them charged directly to my credit card. Later, I learned to use the local train 3000 IDR ($0. 20) which were very clean and pretty modern. I booked my long distance train tickets on [URL]etiket.com[/URL] (English interface, easy to use, price was the same as if I had purchased it through KAI). I did try using KAI, and after registering through the official website but when it came time to book, I was denied; the website allowed registration of passport as ID but when booking, it required a KTP (Indonesian Identity Card). I paid 517,000 IDR ($32) each way for executive class on modern trains.

Currency Exchange. I brought dollars with me. The first place I used was Dolarindo near Classic Hotel. They're practically next door to each other. It is no joke how strict they are checking the dollar bills. One had a crease in the middle and it was rejected. Another, the clerk was pulling at the blue strip saying that it was coming loose. I responded "well stop pulling it!" LOL. 16,100 IDR /1 USD. Afterward, I changed my money at exchanges in Chinatown and got 16,200 and the scrutiny was a lot less. Also, in Chinatown, the exchanges accepted the passport photo on my phone vs Dolarindo wanting to see your actual passport.

Bars: Most of my activity was in Travel and Classic (T2 & T5). A numbered wrist brace is how bar tabs are tracked. Travel mamasans were more relaxed, Classic mamasans were pretty aggressive. In these bars, mamasans manage certain girls (unlike Thailand / Philippines) and so the mamasans will push their girls. It was nice to walk around Travel and see the back area where the girls hang out, waiting to be summoned. Customers can sit and drink in this area, but it is the most cigarette-smoke filled section of the bar. Service 375,000 IDR ($23) for one girl / one hour, or 550,000 for two girls / one hour ($34). Most people seem to pick the two girl option. Almost all the girls spoke bar girl english. When needed, google translate helped! I drank beer in the bars; Anker draft beer pitchers in Travel and Bintang bottles (620 ML) bottles in Classic. I always ask for a bucket of ice because beer gets hot quick here! Another cool thing is that, for the most part, the girls drink from your beer when asked if they want a drink (separate glass with ice) Travel and Classic closed at 3 am.

Plenty of freelancers hanging nearby on sidewalks near classic (where I ended most nights). Due to my level of intoxication, I can't remember the price but there was nothing that did not seem reasonable. Almost all knew my hotel, knew it offered breakfast, etc. One guy I spoke a lot with had girls coming to his place for 4 hours at a time, but again, I can't remember what he told me he was paying; just that I thought it was reasonable.

The Voice karaoke bar was a cool time. I spent time here and sang my butt off too much applause! LOL. The hostess offered to go home with me multiple times and though pretty, I never pulled the plug because I knew I was going to Classic bar afterward.

Religious Sites: I love traveling and seeing sites of the world's religions. There are so many beautiful sites in and around Jakarta.

1. The Roman Catholic church (Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, commonly referred to as Jakarta Cathedral) was beautiful inside and out. My first visit there was during a wedding, so most of the church was closed off during the ceremony. I came back to next day for mass and to experience the church's beauty.

2. Istiqlal Mosque, across the street from the Cathedral (easy enough!) is the largest mosque in SEA. For non-Muslims, it is required to use the guided tour (free); you cannot enter the mosque otherwise (unless the guards think you're Muslim). The tour loans you a bag to carry your shoes as you cannot walk into the mosque while wearing them. The tour guide spoke excellent English and photos were highly encouraged. Don't plan to visit on Fridays as it is the sabbath for Muslims; many people will be in and out praying.

3. Dharma Bakti Temple in Chinatown is the largest Buddhist Temple in Jakarta. It was interesting to see the differences between Chinese Buddhist Temples and Thai Buddhist Temples.

That said; I took a 7-HR train ride to visit the largest religious sites in Indonesia, located near Yogyakarta.

4. Prambanan Temple is the world's third largest Hindu temple. The sunrise tour starts at 0630. Free water with entry ticket. Tickets can be purchased on site or via the website. [URL]https://prambanan.injour[/URL]neydestination. . Tion-info /. Guides are available (tip for service), but otherwise you can walk the grounds and visit the temple as you wish.

5. Borobudur Temple is the world's largest Buddhist temple. It is 50 km (2 hours) distance from Prambanan Temple. Official tickets can be purchased on site or via [URL]https://borobudur.injourneydestination.id/en/.[/URL] While you can stay on grounds for any length of time, one is only allowed to the temple via tour guide for one hour. Your wrist brace is scanned as you enter and exit the temple.

Tourist spots:

1. National Monument.

2. Kota Tua.

3. Museums.

4. Cafe Batavia.

Apps:

1. Grab and Gojek: worked flawlessly. Never waited more than 2 minutes for a ride.

2. [URL]etiket.com[/URL]: great interface and easier to use.

3. Telkomsel: Using it was great when needed. As I approached 3 GB (I didn't know how much data I had used at the time) I was getting text messages saying that my data was almost used up. I was worried about running out of data and topping up my account because I was at Yogyakarta in a temple and had no idea how I was going to accomplish this. Using the temple Wi-Fi, I downloaded the app and learned that a promotion bonus package I received was almost used up; I still had plenty of data to use outside of the bonus package. No top up needed.

4. Traveljakarta: This is the only way to sign up in advance for the nighttime open roof bus tour. I ran out of time to do the tour; availability opened up the day I left. Next time!

5. Jakcard: used to pay for museum entry and trains / buses was completely useless. It never loaded properly. No wonder it only has a one star rating in the App store! Nice thing was that I was able to reload at Bank DKI which was near my hotel.

6. DAI: Easy to use but I could never buy a train ticket on it because it required a KTP number. When I registered my passport details online, the app upgraded me to a Platinum Member. Doesn't help when it won't let me book a train ticket.

Regrets:

1. I missed the 80th Independence Day celebrations the day of my arrival. The stages other areas broken down during the following days made me think it was quite a party! It was just a long travel day for me and I stayed in my first night. I will definitely check this out in the future.

2. Checking out more bars. It was my first trip and I stayed in Classic and Travel for most of the trip. I went to Blok M once and also visited The Voice karaoke bar several times. Now that I am familiar with the area, I want to explore more bars during my next trip.

Exit: If you get a VOA (compared to an eVisa), you cannot use the electronic lanes. You must go through manual passport control. 37.5 k AA miles and $40 on Japan Airlines. Two hour layover in Tokyo with free airport Wi-Fi. Airline food was good and staff was really helpful and accommodating.
