I made couple of reports in the Cartagena forum about the pro action there. Alive and healthy if you want to pick up hookers in a bar environment. Medellin was clearly different for me. Outside of the street walkers outside the liquor store in front of parque lleras, I did not see any obvious hookers walking around. I had no interest in visiting more casas, or strip clubs, and did not do the FB thing before going.
However, there's a very healthy non-pro scene (and I'm calling this non-pro because none of these women asked for money):
In El Poblado between Thursday and Saturday night I met numerous women (and men) and exchanged numbers with them. Most places will close on Sunday or Monday (or on both of these days). On a Saturday night I bar hopped and got two waitresses to give me their numbers, and I hung out with one of them Sunday which was her day off (no sex but we did dance and have drinks). The one I hung out with actually offered her number and in a weird way demanded we hang out. She was cool though. Some of these women, especially the younger ones (early 20's) are genuinely curious about extrajenors. They have boyfriends but want to sneak away on a Sunday and hang out with a foreigner to see what it's like. They'll even take photos with you to show your friends (and encourage you to bring them!) but ask you not to post the photos anywhere.
Most local men, once they get to know you, will try to hook you up with their friends or relatives if you behave like a caballero. At first I thought it was pimping but then I asked this bouncer if it's normal for him to show photos of his cousin to single men he said he's just match making. It dawned on me that drinking, dancing, and going to clubs on the weekend is perfectly normal behavior in Colombia and you're not seen as irresponsible for engaging in it. Also the men are keenly aware if you show up alone to a club, that you're looking for a girl to hang out with, haha.
All this goes with having an adequate knowledge of Spanish. I really doubt you'll get far if your Spanish isn't at a conversational level. Personally, I can mostly only speak Spanish in the present tense, but it was enough, hahaha.
Some of the downsides of El Poblado are the cops, who frisked me numerous times but I wouldn't give them a multa. A dealer later gave me props for not paying off the cops. I don't consume myself but he noticed how I stood up for myself. I really doubt the cops will ever harm a tourist if you're not doing anything wrong. They will stop and frisk you if they think you will fork over cash. Again, I was alone the entire week so I was an easy target to stop and frisk. It's this seedy underside in El Poblado that turned me off. While I get a kick out of the street vendors and always try to buy a little something each night, I found some of the touts to be super annoying. And finally, the hostels and backpackers can be annoying. Too many hostels near Parque LLeras if you ask me.
I don't claim to have a non-pro girlfriend down there, but certainly if I had spent more time in El Poblado, and put in more effort, it would have been entirely possible. I already got plenty of messages on WhatsApp asking me when I'll be back, but the biggest hurdle will be visiting regularly. All the non-pros I met would ask me numerous times when I would be back, and each time I'd say "a couple of months" they'd get a thoughtful look in their eyes like they were calculating whether it was worth being with someone they won't get to see very often.
And finally, before I went to Cartagena I let the ladies I met know that through WhatsApp. I'm pretty sure half of them told me they never saw the sea before. Which actually made me reflect for a moment.

I have been visiting Medellin for 6 years, 3 to 6 times a year, and have never been stopped by the police. I travel alone, and I have walked many miles in Poblado, Laureles, and downtown. There is another gringo who posts on a Costa Rica board who has been stopped numerous times in San Jose, and was stopped during his first visit to Medellin. There must be a profile the police are looking for. I have seen a few gringos in Hooters in Park Lleras that I wished the police would just haul away to jail and give them an attitude adjustment session. Those managers have more patience than I have ever had.

My clothes are pretty normal for Colombia (denims, shirt, and sneakers). I wasn't the only one stopped. It had nothing to do with how I looked, unless I looked like I would bribe the cops. They were just looking for multas.

There were two hostels and a police station on the street where I was staying so it at around 2 am you'd see cops on bikes scan people. At one point they had an actual check point where they would pat people down.

From my experience with Colombianas, and especially the girls from Medellin, sometimes there is a different motive. Which is just to be taken out and shown a good time, dinner, drinks, dancing, at a gringos expense. This is all part of the game. They figure if you're a "nice guy", there's no way you'll expect to get laid on the first date. And hey, they're "good girls" so you wouldn't expect that, right? First couple of dates is just to get to know each other. At your expense. Sometimes the investment pays off eventually, sometimes not.

I'm a black guy that was dress in blue jeans, sketchers shoes and a button down shirtsleeve shirt. He asked for my passport which I didn't have but I did take a picture of my passport that I had on my phone. He looked it over and asked where I was staying and why I was in Medellin and I told him in my broken Spanish that I was on vacation and attending the Tucan Spanish school. He said have a good day and I continued on my way. I didn't feel offended. I just thought they were doing there job. I did see several people getting frisked around Parque Lleras during the night with hands behind their backs and legs spread type of frisk.

Nothing good happens after midnight, this applies to every single town on the planet.
I realize that you can be stopped at any time, but after midnight it's dangerous, between cops and criminals.

[/QUOTE]Then good luck in El Poblado, Medellin. Week days the bars close at 2 am, and weekends it's 4 am. Weekends don't expect much action until at least past 9 pm. The centro casas are open early though if that is what you're looking for.
As for your other post, I doubt you'll find sub $100 rooms in chica friendly hotels or less than $100 a night for an apartment between December and April. El Poblado apartments seem booked well in advance and there appears to be high demand. If it's your first time in Medellin I advise you to stay in El Poblado. The La Provenza area is pretty nice and quiet and only a few minutes walk to Parque Lleras.

He kept insisting I had drugs, and even asked me to unroll my money roll. That was a big indicator that he wanted a multa. The other stops were mostly friendly, but I absolutely downright refused to give them a multa even when asked to give them 5 k. I smiled and shook my head. They didn't push things anymore.
I doubt any tourist will get beaten or detained during these frisks unless you're carrying contraband. Then I'm not sure what would happen. Maybe a bigger bribe to let you go.
Zero problems with cops in Cartagena. In fact they were useful there when they would help out at crosswalks to stop traffic.
Which city is best for mongering? I'm looking for something similar to San Jose Costa Rica. Hoping to find something safer and cheaper.
