My experience with the Medellin police
As I said in an earlier post, I have never been stopped by the police in and around Medellin. About a year ago, I was downtown looking for a little mall with many stores that sell souvenirs. I had been there before with a lady friend, but did not know where it was located. It was raining very lightly. I asked a couple of policemen on a corner where that mall was located. They didn't know, but one called someone and got the address. They walked with me all the way to the mall. I offered them either 10 or 20 mil (I don't remember which). They would not take it. I know there are probably bad police personnel in every department, but I have only respect for the ones in Medellin.
Late January. Early February. Good time to visit?
I've been to Medellin twice. In December and November. Thinking of going to CTG the last week of January and then heading to MDE the first week of February. For those who know. Is this a decent time to visit? I assume that Christmas until the first week or so of January are pretty close. But would imagine that things would pick up again at the end of January. Also. I hear the weather is nice in Jan. / Feb. - is that true?
My Colombian Ex-Wife Says.
My Colombian (Bogota) Ex-Wife offers a slightly different definition. While most look down on anyone who has sex for money, there is a definite pecking order:
1) Prepago. A chica who works on occasion with a purpose (such as paying for school) and will likely stop working when the objective is accomplished. May be more inclined to find a sugar daddy.
2) No specific name given. A chica who works somewhat regularly (freelance) to pay the bills, particularly if she has kids.
3) Puta. A professional. Someone who consider this her job. May work at a casa or strip club, but may not. Probably what most of us would considered a "hardened pro. ".
I guess it's all a matter of degree and perspective.
Talking to my girl today and the subject of hookers came up so I took it upon myself to ask. She said that a prepago is a freelance sex worker. A girl connected to an establishment is only known as a puta, where as someone working independently would be known as a prepago.
Rateros in El Centro-Watch your pockets!
Last night I was with a buddy making the rounds at "ground zero" around 9 PM which is the area around the Museum and the Church in El Centro. We were on the street to the side of the Museum where all the Sacaleros hang, came around the corner, and three girls came up to us to distract us and than a Ratero and an accomplice came from behind and tried to lift my buddy's wallet. There where a lot of girls and locals in the area but my buddy was quick on his feet and stopped the Ratero in his tracks when he felt his hand trying to get in his pocket which was covered by his shirt. My buddy yelled Poliicia and I lunged at the Ratero and his accomplice and they ran off.
You can never be too careful in this area, even if your with somebody else, and especially at night and your an obvious gringo which is the case with my buddy. It's unfortunate but I have two friends down here staying in El Centro who won't even leave their rooms at night out of fear of being robbed in El Centro after dark.
