Just having cash / ID / CC is fine if you wear tight pants. If you tuck in your shirt, you should never put anything in your back pocket. I tend to wear loose jeans. Not super baggy but loose enough to be comfortable. Whenever I sit down, especially on a sofa, everything falls out of my pockets! I also don't tuck in my shirts so it covers my pockets. I carry a chained wallet (not sticking out) and put in the minimum. Cash I will need for the day, ID, copy of passport, 1 ATM card. That I put in my front pocket, never anything in the back.

My ATM cards stay locked up in my apartment here. Yet their are some very stupid gringos out there.

I didn't have a wallet but put the cash in my right FRONT pocket. One dude tapped me on the shoulder while the other guy reached into my LEFT front pocket. Unfortunately for him he picked the wrong pocket and got nothing but a hankerchief. They ran off and I didn't even see what they looked like. But I'm on the same page with you guys: no wallet, no valuables, no passport, and only the minimum amount of money needed.

I could save money on the $1500+ rent I am paying for my apartment in a nice part of town here in the US by moving to a ghetto-ass, crime-ridden part of town and pay $350-400 bucks a month, but the cost savings don't equate to the level of danger you'd face on a day to day basis.

Best to be able to have the funds to bail yourself out of a jam. If it gets stollen (never has, in 30 years of travel to some funky places) so be it.

You can still get robbed anywhere in Medellin, even in Poblado. There are lots of guys that just hit the Casa's during the day and stay in their rooms at night. Tremendous value in El Centro for those on a limited budget.

English speaking chicas in casas here are non-existent. So for any of you newbie lurkers out there you can check out Valerie at Energy. Nice face and speaks English.

Also, if they pay the basic rate, there is not much spare time to spend conversating.

My opinion is that, if a girl speaks English:
1) she has some higher education => it's unlikely she will work in a casa.

That's nothing more than an attempt to steal with ability. No violence, no weapons. Yes I agree with all comments about "why one should carry so many valuable things when walking out?

If one goes walking around the Centro, especially after dark, the typical robbing technique is different: 2 or more guys approach from the back, hold the arms, while another searches the pockets. All pockets. A knife is optional but common. All takes no more than 30 seconds, then they run away. I have seen it 2 times in front of me, and the unlucky guy was a local, not a gringo.

In short: keep distance from groups of young guys, looking on front, at right, at left, and even back.

You can't be too careful and the rateros are brazen even going after a pair of gringos versus only one.

Just cleared security at MDE and they had two lines to X-Ray all the carry on bags, etc. One line was empty and the other full. The Police went through everybody's paperwork and then directed you to which line to go through to be inspected. One line had 5 police standing on the other side of the X-Ray belt. I got sent to the other line which had no police but security personnel screening everything. Since nobody wasn't in the other line I didn't give it much thought. After walking around five minutes I noticed people being sent through the first line with all the Police. They were going through everybody's carry on belongings, looking through passengers books, and opening up everything and going through their stuff with a fine tooth comb. Two of the police had clipboards and were writing down stuff as well and they seemed to be asking the passengers a lot of questions, etc. I don't know what was going on and how they decided who to screen. I didn't see any other gringos in the line. I fly into Panama City and recall on my last trip they had Panama Immigration officials checking everybody's Passports getting off the plane from Medellin and they were questioning the Colombians and others but not gringos.
