Those people have always been around, but the formation of the Tea Party movement was the official christening of that vessel (the ship). Even before that movement, there were already signs that these people desired a voice. John McCain in 2008 didn't pick Sarah Palin as his running mate because they shared identical platforms and ideologies. He knew something was already brewing in the Republican Party and chose to court those people.

To me, as much as I liked McCain, his selection of Palin as Vice Presidential nominee foreshadowed the end of any good outcomes for the Republican Party. It's sad as the Tea Party had good intent consistent with ideal conservative / libertarian values: small government, less spending, a higher threshold for foreign military involvement, etc.

Unfortunately due to the decentralized nature of the movement, some sectors began incorporating social issues into the sphere of platforms. Those social issues derailed the good intents of a reformed government and led to what the Republican Party has become; shortsighted, xenophobic cultural conformists, irrational, anti-intellectual. I held on to see if the GoP would gather some sense only to see Donald Trump become the Kamikaze ending to that hope.

In short, it's not the bowing to the emperor that we have to worry about. It's the actual sentiments of at least half of the party. It saddens me to say that this IS the Republican party now, with or without Trump.[/QUOTE]This is an incredible post. So True.

The Southern strategy was a Republican Party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters in the South by appealing to racism against African Americans.

Dixiecrats emerged after Truman's 1948 integration of the military.

In the south, in the 1960's, the democratic party was deeply divided, with George Wallace tugging the party apart from President Johnson's big, dominant, civil rights expansion.

That gave President Nixon the space to attract southern racists into the GOP in large numbers.

These had before only looked at 3rd Party options. And it's true that there was some of this in Palin, especially with the goofy global conspiracy theories.

Take a spin around the vegetable fields and fruit orchards to see those doing the stoop labor, covered with pesticides. Ask agribusiness if they can make a profit without stiffing the workers or receiving subsidies. Same with the oil conglomerates.

Maybe people want the federal govt to be restricted.

Another big turning point was the nomination of Barry Goldwater, '64 election. He ran on a strong states rights platform and only won five Deep South states and his home state of Arizona. That was essentially the end the Republican Party as we knew it.

So apart from running a completely unnecessary budget deficit we now can see the complete failure of Trumps Trade wars.

The combined USA Goods and services trade deficit increased to $679 billion in 2020, compared to $481 billion in 2016, the year before Trump took office. The trade deficit in goods alone hit $916 billion, a record high and an increase of about 21 percent from 2016.

Labeling people as racists, misogynistic, and homophobic should be used more sparingly and only where it is a without doubt, especially the racist part as that can ruin people's careers and livelihoods. I choose to be more careful with my words, pointing my finger at "cultural prejudice" or those that believe in a "cultural hierarchy". That large sect of the GOP seem to push their WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) image of what America should be.

On an individual basis, those people are not even detrimental. Unfortunately, due to the effects of herd / hoard mentality, the actions of the group effectively becomes xenophobic and exclusive in nature. Unspoken social friction will continue to exist and I don't even fully support legislating more civil rights. But my concern is when the hoard's positions become incorporated into actual political platforms and agendas. Then the crazies start taking positions of power and you now have nut job, uncouth conspiracy theorists like Marjorie Taylor Greene in the United States Congress and assholes like Josh Hawley trying to become the next Republican JFK.
