Philosophus, is this accurate? I have never been to St. Petersburg, but I recently spent a number of months in Moscow, and found it very safe. I explored the city, including late at night, and did not feel worried for my phone or laptop or anything else. I have been in the whole Russia from SP to Vladivostok and never ever got robbed or any tentative of scam to me. Precautions need to be take but not to be paranoic, just relax and let it be. I have close friends who have been living there for years and they warned me right away. This is a huge, ongoing, and widespread "razvod" scam that has permeated much of the most popular bar and club scene, and is not just limited to strip clubs. I have experienced daily attempts at being scammed on Tinder and by girls approaching you on Rubinstein street. Bartenders, waiters, police, and mafia are getting kick backs, and nothing is being done about it because there is so much money it in. I feel sorry for all the tourists who have been scammed during the football games in SPB.
Signs to look out for, and usually with 18-25 year old girls.
1. Tinder girl will suggest to meet on Nevski or Rubinstein street.
2. She names a good bar (could be Karaoke bar where each song is 1000, each bottle is 6000, the bill is in hundreds of dollars quickly).
3. She will say she is with another girl or girls.
4. She will usually say "we just want to get very drunk".
5. If you met a girl say in you hotel bar, never go to the bar of her choosing, it's a scam.

By far the best way to see girls!
I went down to our reception as asked for an English speaking taxidriver. By the way: English speaking taxidrivers are very rare, but I had luck. The taxidriver spoke a little bit English, and I started a conversation. I pointed out, that I was looking for "a little bit of fun" involving girls. He said he knew an apartment and asked, whether he should take me there. Of course I accepted.
He drove me to an apartment with 5 girls (5000 rubles / hour), very nice interior, nice rooms. Unfortunately all girls were occupied (Friday night), so he took me to another apartment (6000 rubes / hour). Even nicer apartment. To sum it up: he showed me 5 (different apartments, Every apartment having at least 3 girls (one apartment had 7 girls) and all were within the price range of 5 k-6 k rubles / hour. And the best was: every girl in every apartment was a stunner. I am really not exaggerating. Really. The only downside to this was, that the taxidriver took 1000 rubles per drive, which was about double the price he would normally take.
To sum it up:
A taxidriver getting you around in apartments is the best you can do. Do not go for these high price escort websites as all pictures are fake (girls do not even have the same hair color compared to the pictures).
To save some money while doing some sightseeing in the city best use Uber and save your taxidriver for the important dates.
And: St. Peter is worth a visit!
