Since I am contracted to the Government, I will give insight on the rising crime in Colombia. Since I have traveled to Colombia last year, I have been briefed by Operational Security personnel about increasing crime in Colombia, which includes Medellin. The effects of the Global Recession are beginning to take its toll on Colombia. Jobs in Colombia are dwindling, especially Medellin are dwindling. Colombia's GDP is decreasing. Colombians are desperate, therefore-to obtain funding to take care of their basic necessities-criminal acts are increasing. Also, President Uribe is approaching the end of his presidential tenure. Cartels and paramilitary groups are preparing to overtake/test the incoming President and his/her officials. I will not create a variable equation to determine the prospective rise in Crime in Colombia because there is much more to both scenarios than arithmetic. Expect crime to rise to significant levels. You do not have to take heed to my information. I am only requesting that everybody on this board have fun, but be cautious and vigilant. The coming months will Test Colombia.

The policeforce consist of medium smart people and they make medium work, sometimes giving in to their low levels insticts, i.e. to look for some embarrasing photos, which is of no legal interest at all. We romantices about police, but they are just us with a uniform and a lot of rights to do things, which they are not mentally prepared or developed to take care of.

A French citizen, who had been missing for over a week, was found dead in an abandoned taxi in Bello, north of Medellin, authorities announced Tuesday.

A dismembered body found in a taxi in the town north of Medellín on May 14 was identified as that of Frenchman Gilbert Joseph Pierre Vial Guerrero "whose family reported him missing on 11 May when he traveled from La Ceja to Envigado", the Antioquia office of the Prosecutor General said.

"The Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) was able to identify a body found in an abandoned taxi on May 14 as the missing French man", the PG added.

Guys this really sucks! I'm planning to go back there this summer and now this shit happens. How about Cartagena compare to Medellin right now? Is it safer there? I'll just go there instead.

The tourist zone in Cartagena is the one really safe area in all of Colombia. The airport is in the city in a fairly safe barrio(Crespo). Transport from the airport to the tourist zone is quite safe as well. Cartagena is really the best choice for Colombian newbies. And it is the best choice for people who are a bit nervous about personal safety.

I have been pounding on the problems in Medellín partly because of the people who continue to post about how safe it is here. Today it is not very safe. That doesn't mean that the experienced traveler can't enjoy Medellín if he is careful. However, if he does stupid shit, he is fucked. I know of some people who are leaving the city this summer for the relative safety of the nearby smaller towns like Rionegro.

Poblado, Laureles Estadio, La América, and parts of Belén are the safer parts of Medellín these days. Envigado and Sabaneta, just south of the city, are not very safe.

One reason for the problems is that the heads of the paramilitaries have been jailed. Some were extradited to the US. There is a battle for succession. President Uribe has been calling in reinforcements and the Mayor is putting more police on the streets. The slowing economy hasn't helped, either.

I am hopeful that things will settle down. Medellín is my permanent home, and I have no plans to move. But I cannot predict the future.

One of our guests a few months back wittnessed a guy being shot the bottom side of Paque Poblado.

Also three guy's including a police officer being shot at a bank hold up not far from the Mansion, we went down and had a coffee at Juan Valdes and watched the guy's being loaded into the ambulances.

Also , its probley a colombian thing, two colombians have been shot in Mayorista just latley (onre infront of Big Bad Boyd) causing the bars to be closed.

I am not being Mr. Dooms Day, nor am I trying to detract tourism from Colombia. The Government's intelligence on the increasing violence in Colombia is real. As previously stated, because of the dire effects of the Global economy (jobs dwindling in Colombia) and the end of President Uribe's tenure in office, crime will significantly spike. As a criminal syndicate, which includes paramilitary groups; if you knew the strong ruling hand of your nation (Uribe) would renounce his/her reign, wouldn't you take advantage of the situation to gain more power and support? By overtaking the incoming officials, you would be able to conduct more business (increasing profits) without Government interference. To relinquish power from the incoming administration, you would need to establish fear into the localities, then your Federal Government. This situation is beginning to occur in Colombia and is already happening in Mexico.

Prior to the Global economic downturn, Colombia's employment had gradually increased, but unemployment levels remained relatively high. There is a lack of interest in their GDP because the Global economy (mostly consumers) does not have the financial funding for these products. This is why Colombian exports are decreasing. Also, the Free Trade Agreement, which is vital to Colombian business, still has not been approved by American Legislators. Friday, 15 May 2009, Penthouse Party, Ruta 13, Luna Lunera and "Casa Los Angeles", !
