I am trying to choose between Samui and Phuket. I have been to Bangkok, Pattaya, Ko Chang, Ko Samed, Samui and Lamai Beach in Samui is my favorite spot. It is very laid back, has many tiracs (although they are not as attractive as in BKK there are always some gems). The beach is pretty good. The market prices for ladies in Lamai are ST 500, LT 1000, barfines 300, clearly very reasonable and similar to Pattaya. Often you don't need to pay any barfines if you pick your ladies from the discos Fusion or SuperSub.

I am considering Phuket this time... Phuket is much bigger and I hear that it doesn't have the island feel unlike Samui. How much pricier is Phuket compared to Pattaya? What are the typical LT price a mid 30s guy in decent shape would end up paying? What are the average barfines?

On these criteria, how do you rate the islands you visited?

I would skip Ko Samed. Ko Chang is nice, sex tourism does exist but it is not that much to your face. It is a good option for family, but it is far and there is not much to do there.

I love Ko Samui and Ko Phangan. In Samui, Bo Phut or Maenam would be more suitable for a family vacation. Lamai is seedy and getting seedier and it is great place for sex tourists. Ko Phanga is overall very nice and more laid back than Samui.

As for Phuket, I don't have first hand knowledge...

Phuket has become a place for suckers. Price 50% to 100% more than Pattaya and mostly old girls.

For varisou reasons I am a fan of Samui so I'd vouch for that island
Prices are comparatelively cheaper than mainland or Phuket
The level of the gems is lower but it is not a mission impossible to find good ones.

I was in Kata Beach last week so will add what I found. Kata is a very quiet place. As a pure beach holiday destination, I prefer it over Patong. As a hobby destination, however, it is not so great either in quality or quantity, but seems to win over in attitude.

I stayed at the southern end of Kata beach. Most of Kata is walled-off from the very nice beach by the enormous Club Med Resort complex. This restricts direct beach access from much of Kata. It is a significant walk of 20-30 minutes from one end to the other or a tiresome negotiation with the taxi guys to do the same. I walked. You discover more by walking, anyway.

The southern end is quieter from a hobbying perspective. There are a few small bars down the road that marks the southern end of Kata. Stand at the corner facing south opposite Italian Job Coffee and turn left up the hill. There are several small bars, one of them some way down. When I was there they usually had one or two women of more mature years and no customers.

Walking north along the main road which fronts the Club Med Complex wall and you will find two main side streets. Both of these had similar small bars with the same profile.

The primary bar area is at the northern end of the main road not too far along from Kata Central. It is less than a dozen or so bars, with anything from two to six or seven girls. Exploring the back alleys around this area reveals several additional small bars.

The quality of the girls, on the whole, is diabolical. It is difficult to find one not heavily tattooed, under forty or not overweight with several kids. The youngest one I found was a 27 year old mother of two. Kata seems to be a retirement resort or lifestyle choice for bar girls well past their prime or not competitive enough for Patong, Pattaya or Bangkok. A number seemed to be semi-retired or part-timers. There are a few lady boys in the mix, but they are not aggressive.

That said, Kata is not hopeless. It is without the high-pressure sell of Patong. For example, they will make thirsty noise hints about lady drinks, but they don't persist if you say no. I spent about 3000 baht on lady drinks over two nights, but also had a great time playing games, especially the remove the block games. These kind of bars are places to find attentive LTs or just have a quiet night out without the hassle of places like Patong.

At one bar I went two nights running I was told that I had been the only customer the previous night. I had three girls more or less implore me to take them back to my hotel, and one wanted me to fold her up in my suitcase and take her to my next destination, which was Singapore. The lack of customers was a bit sad, but it presents opportunities. I was told that things pick up a bit from November through to April.

I found one very nice 33 year old with only one kid, but she had to go sort out some emergency with another girl and she missed our arranged rendezvous.

Kata has massage places everywhere. It is not easy to tell which offer special services. The ones closer to the more upmarket hotels seem to be mostly legit massage places. The ones on the back streets are quite obviously not. The girl quality is appalling. These back street places are understandably desperate for customers. I made the mistake of walking past one massage place twice within a few minutes late one night, which was wrongly taken as an expression of interest. The fattest one launched herself across the street at me in a grab attempt. It's been a couple of decades since I played rugby, but I stepped left to get her off balance, then stepped right and powered around on the outside. I managed to beat a fat Thai chick for pace.

Most of the more upmarket Kata hotels charge a joiner fee of THB1000 or more. Kata also seems to be a bit of a family destination. I stayed at the Sugar Palm Resort, which I found to be a bit snooty, has a 1000 baht joiner fee and lots of families staying. There were babies crawling all over the place. If there is a next time in Kata, I'll look for somewhere less family friendly up the northern end.

I was only in Kata briefly, but just by walking around the streets for a few hours and the opportunities slowly became more apparent. It might be one of those places where if you put in the effort you get rewards.
