I'll be in Cartagena mid-October for 2 wks and I'm arranging to stay in an apartment via Juan Ventura.
It will be my first trip to Cartagena since 1999.
Anyone know if apartments have safes? If not, how do you protect your valuables when having someone over?
I remember the street vendors would sell Coca Colas in small open bottles. I always wondered if they were safe and sanitary. Anyone have a case of travelers diarrhea in Cartagena? If so, I'll be sure to bring a bottle of cipro and zithromax. LOL.
What are some of the brothel names that are in the more southern region of the city (back then, that area was considered more dangerous)? Back in 1999 I think I went to one such place but I can't recall the name.
Is Cartagena still littered with army guys carrying submachine guns?

The Italians are always there in droves. I have never been in CTG in August.

Juan rents my apartment. It has a safe as does the one that Juan owns. Most of the others do as well. Ask Juan.
I got the trots the first few visits to CTG. After your body adjusts to the bacteria there, there is no problem. There are no Cokes being sold in small bottles anymore. The tap water can cause problems. Therefore I would be very careful buying anything from a street vendor. Cipro is sold without prescription and worked the best for me.
Anything outside of the tourist zone is more dangerous. Many parts are not that dangerous while some are. The trick is to know which is which. The casa names change, and they open and close frequently.
The tourist zone is still heavily policed but quite safe.
Thanks Tom for the info.
Anyone know any English speaking taxi drivers they recommend?
Also how do cell phones work. Can I take my Verizon samsung phone, and simply replace the back chip with a sim chip? Or is it best to simply buy a cell phone down there?
In apartments, do they use US outlets/voltages? Or do i need a converter?
I want say some if you are planing to come to Cartagena don't worry you going to be safe here and I think if you come for holidays you need phone.
Other thing the taxi drivers you need be care with that no for theys go robery is for theys ask to the turist the doble for 1 way. Example for the taxy from the airport to bocagrande the price are 12. 000 thousand pesos in dolars 5 dolars almost 6 so some people ask for 10 dolars is stuppid and I fight very much for that reason. The minimum way is 4. 000 thousand pesos in dolars are 2 dolars is the minimum for go the bocagrande to the centro ohh and in the night very late the 12am a. 5am the price minimum for the taxy are 5. 000 pesos
So. Have fun time here in Cartagena.
1. Same voltage as in the states
2. Buy a cellphone, It will cost you maybe $ 35, if you buy a cheap nokia through comcel.
3. I am happy that the Colombian military patrols with automatic weapons.
4. Tom Tom is 100% correct, some areas outside the tourist area are nice, some are rough.
5. Casas are all on the outskirts of the city
6. In August Cartagena is over-run by the loud buffoons from Italy. they are disgraceful.

There are not many English-speaking taxistas. The ones I have met were worse thieves than the others. Juan can help with the taxi. Also, Martin at the Loco Gringo restaurant in Laguito can help.

So I am leaving tomorrow to CTG for 1 week. Any last minute advice or tips for me? Also does anybody know what the best clubs are for dancing and drinking with non pros? I will post a full report once I get back.
Thanks guys.
Zev, Mr Babilla is your best bet, read the forum especially this thread http://www.internationalsexguide.info/forum/showthread.php?t=2016
it has some really long trip reports if I remember correctly one member reporting on the night and daytime nonpro places.
Mr.Babilia is a good place to TAKE non-pros. As far as meeting them there? Doubtful, as most don't have 10k pesos to go pay cover charges at places like Mr. Babilia and then the drink prices. You probably could see some hanging out front, hoping someone will pay their cover charge though.

You are much better off meeting non-pros during the day. The girls you pick up at night will, more than likely, be pros.
How easy is it for a non/little Spanish speaker to monger in Cartagena in comparison to Bogota? I've been to Bogota, spent a week there and had a girl every night, stayed in Zona Rosa and felt perfectly safe. Is that same safe atmosphere also in Cartagena, or more accurately, is there a safe area to stay in where a non-spanish speaker can hobby happily via a casa or similar high-density areas?
Thanks,
