I understand what you all see in TravelPlanet's post. On some levels I am a little surprised he revealed it and wonder if he has much experience here on the Medellin board- probably not much or would have known his report would be received with some form of shock and awe. Compared to what TP has available in the US (he actually did ok, I guess. But that is not the standard one should take to Colombia. It's actually kind of dangerous considering the girl intimated harm if he didn't comply. She's obviously a barrio girl and they are most always predators if you show them an opening.
These kinds of posts are learning experiences and teaching moments. I'm glad he shared his report because it serves as a reminder. One can go four or five trips without a hitch, forget the basics or get cocky, and then find himself on the losing end of a deal because he just forgot he is in Colombia. TP made the understandable mistake of believing that a penthouse and money makes them act human and decent. It does not. They can be very disrespectful.
Sadly, this girl that walked with a month's income will have wasted most of it within a few days. They just cannot handle success.
But for the love of the hobby, teach, don't talk down. There is no need to ridicule. I realize it is frustrating to hear but I am glad he posted the report because being reminded of how things really are. I learn from every report that was a successful trip but more from someone posting what might not have gone well.

The problem is I don't believe the poster was aware of World Travelers list or the pricing in Colombia despite this information being available on this forum. It's not so hard to find. He didn't overpay. He got taken advantage of and she was happy to keep doing it. He could easily have two prepagos living with him for what he's paying her.

You shouldn't be paying more than 200k for short time in Medellin. In the casas its significantly cheaper, but if you're going to pick up outside, stay away from the strip clubs and never go over 200k. Believe me most of these girls aren't so busy. They'll agree to 150-200k. The Colombian peso has also been moving higher and you can always mention that.

Reading the forum can be tedious and time consuming, but it is a good way to avoid mistakes like over paying or ending up in a risky situation.

I agree with you except the part about mentioning the strength of the Colombian peso. I don't think the girls care about or understand foreign exchange. For them, a peso is a peso. I don't understand what concern they would have about how pesos line up against the currency a punter uses back home. It's not unlike the idea of justifying paying three times the going rate because it's still cheaper than what it would cost in London or Toronto.

Inflation is almost half what it used to be from last year. I'm not sure how that impacts the value of the currency. I thought the peso is more tied to the price of oil.

I returned a week ago from a 12-day trip to Medellin. I have been there multiple times each year for the past six years. I rely on Facebook for meeting the chicas. Many are repeats from previous trips, but I always try to see at least one new chica each trip. Only a couple of times I've had a problem with the chica not showing up or not informing me beforehand.
Something changed on the last trip, and I hope it is not a trend. I arrange meetings a few days ahead and send a remainder the day before the planned meeting. Three arrangements, all with new chicas, went awry. The first evening I was there, the chica (new friend on FB) sent a message about the time of our scheduled meeting, and asked if she could bring a girlfriend. Since I had not met either chica, I told her no. She then decided she couldn't come alone. She contacted me a few times later, but our schedules never coincided.
The second incident happened the next night. A longtime FB friend who I had never met was scheduled. I was a little skeptical of her because I hadn't seen any comments on FB to indicate she was working. She communicated prior to our scheduled time to let me know everything was good. Later, she sent a message that she was in a taxi, but traffic was very bad. I believed that because it was raining, and Thursday evening. Then she went silent. I called more than an hour later and a guy answered the phone. I asked for her, but no one came back to the phone. The next day, she sent a message that she was involved in an accident and had to go to the hospital. A few days later, she contacted me again. I told her I did not believe she was in an accident, because she had posted photos and she didn't appear to have an injuries. Anyway, I didn't see her.
The third was another longtime FB friend. I sent a message the day before our scheduled meeting. I never heard from her until the next day, just telling me she could not meet me that day. Then she never responded to the next message.
A fourth incident was a different scenario. I had seen the chica before, and she had nice large natural boobs. The chica who showed up was not the same chica. The new chica had just gotten a boob job, and it was terrible IMO. It was one where they cut from the nipple to the base of the boob. The scars were fairly new. She had also gotten butt implants, and her cheeks were still bruised. The profile on FB has evolved two times from the chica I originally saw to the current chica.
After all that drama, I still had a great time and was with as many chicas as I wanted. I will probably return next month if I can get my schedule coordinated with some doctors' schedules.
I don't want to publish any chica's name, because maybe I just hit an unlucky streak. If anyone is curious, I will send info by PM.

[/QUOTE]This is pretty standard behavior in Colombia when they go dating. On the first date she'll bring a friend as a chaperone. A prepago might do it to check you out the first time and make sure she wants to work with you.

I've had a couple of girls bring it up when trying to get 300k. They would say it's only 100 USD.
