I am not sure I totally agree on that logic McA. It does have some truth to it. But the Italians probably distance themselves more due to economic issues than cultural ones. Considering Romania got caught up with Russia and all of that.

Moldavia was also a big country for a long time, and not bullied as much. At least not until Russia and the transnistria story came to be. And that can be considered Romania too. Culturally and linguistically.

There were clear historic links with a lot of romans settling in Dacia during the roman empire. But of course genetics usually only shows where someone take the brides from. Not where the culturally imposing male armies arrive from.
