It's not like the place is crawling with beggars. About 80 or 90 percent of them are women with kids roaming around Fields all day long. You will see the same faces over and over again. They can be quite persistant and you might have to learn how to deal with them but the best way is not to give them any money. First of all because they are most likely forced by their husbands or other men to go out begging and second: when you give them money each time they come to you, they will start to remember you after a while and then it gets really hard to get rid of them.

The remaining 10 or 20 percent are elderly people, disabled people, tramps and kids (the latter not accompanied by an adult). Depending on my mood and the change I have in my wallet I give them some money sometimes. Or I buy them some food, in particular the kids.

Personally I find the vendors, who are much more omnipresent than the beggars, more annoying. I have learned that totally ignoring them doesn't work most of the time. What works for me is that I look at their merchandise (never look them in the eyes!), shake my head and walk on. I don't even say 'no' or 'no thank you' most of the time.
