You should tell everyone you know that your phone had been stolen. Maybe being used for extortion purposes, etc.

I was there last night. Walked from Revo and 7th. (the tequila festival) to the zona at around 9pm. No problems and nothing out of the ordinary.

As far as I've seen and heard the zona has not been affected by the cartel wars. My friend and I speculate that it might be "out of bounds" because the cartels want to protect it as one of the few areas where money is still being made since tourism is down so much. This assumes the cartels have their finger in the till in some places in the zona but that isn't an unreasonable assumption.

Here's a little pointer for you high end cel phone holders out there. I think I posted this elsewhere but I don't remember where. When I lived State-Side I had a Sprint service (actually, I still have it) and a state-of the-art samsung i500 phone. The first one got ripped off (in TJ by a masero at Sr. Frogs) and I had it replaced under insurance. I also had and older Nokia brick that W2 used.

The nice customer service rep at Sprint told me that if I wanted to, I could switch phones when traveling into unfriendly territory and for almost a year, I'd call Sprint on Friday morning and ask them to switch phones for me so that while I was in Mexico I would not have to worry about losing the i500 again. She helped me program the Nokia witht he correct numbers so that when it booted up, it would log on properly.

It worked GREAT. They were very helpful and I the call to customer service took 5 minutes. They had the ESN of the other phone so all I had to do was call and say: "Please switch my service to the Nokia phone you have on my account please." They'd pull the levers and in about 10 minutes the nokia was alive with my original number.

I would tuck my i500 away and when I got to the border on the return, I'd call customer service and have them switch back. Very simple, no extra charge and no worries about losing an expensive phone.

As for you, Fire Fox, I feel your pain and it's not a majhor leap for anyone to understand that an expensive cel phone picked up off the street anywhere in SoCal would find it's way to Mexico in no time flat. Hopefully you backed up your data and can email your contacts with a story that they can believe.

Next time, take a rubber throw away with you, you'll be glad you did because this sort of thing will go on and on.
