It's kind of different & takes some getting used to but I've spent New Years in Sosua for many years now and have become accustomed to it so I hardly notice anymore. I can remember when the bars stayed open later, the girls would come out late & then I would just stay out later too. Can remember alot of incidents too because of excessive drinking.

December is a big gift giving season in the DR, but since the DR is not a very consumer orientated society due to most of the population having little disposable income, it is also a time when merchants make most of their money rather than slashing prices. At this time of the year you will see stores like La Sirena stocking up with things like children's bicycles and Christmas lights, but most of them go quickly at full price and they are not trying to get rid of unsold stock after Christmas.

Black Friday in the US is obviously an attempt by the large chain store merchants to whip up some consumer excitement and get them spending money on 'bargains', but it is also a time to dump poor selling merchandise or obsolescent in "special offers" to raise cash for new stock, just like July and August is a great time to get good deals on the old year model cars as the new year model cars come into stock.

Here's an example. Last year Microsoft was booking multimillion dollars of losses on its Surface tablet computers, which had not sold as well as they hoped, but this Thanksgiving they are quite the hot sale item and Microsoft is dumping huge numbers of the devices alleged to be "refurbished" on Ebay.
